mostly downloaded movie are in DivX format, especially when u got them from a torrent site. DivX file will shown as .avi file, but it will not playable in standard player like Windows media player. u need to install a divx codec/plug-in in this case. or use Realplayer (check it in www.real.com) or VLC player (www.videolan.org) which is able to open the subtitle file if the movie got one. gud luck
