Birds over Doha city

To all budding Ornithologists - Can anyone tell me the type of bird that we have seen recently flying in flocks over Doha? They looks as though they might be on their way to migrate somewhere and my children want to know what they are. Thanks

There were flamingoes in Dukhan a couple of weeks ago. Lot's of those big black gulls too, in the UK we call them cormorants.

Ok I do not know much about the birds, but I asked a local person/hunter about this. Do you mean the bigger black birds? They are called Looha in Arabic. They migrate here in winter and come from Iran & Russia. They stay around water. According to the Bird Book of Qatar I guess it would be the Socotra Cormorants (totally black). They are referred to as the Batman bird in the book.

Depending on the color of the birds you saw, but did not mention, they could be, according to the book the black headed gulls (black head - white body) which are joined by hundreds. They come from Central Asia.

Hope this is the info you are looking for and you can tell your kids.
