Awards presented for Urdu works
"Mousa unveils the Majlis’ souvenir as the Pakistani and Indian ambassadors, Atiq and Naz look on"
Urdu-language’s most celebrated global event was held at the Sheraton Hotel over the weekend with a galore of annual awards, book launches and poetry sessions.
The 13th Aalmi Frogh-e-Urdu Adab Award by the Doha-based Majlis Frogh-e-Urdu Adab Qatar (MFUAQ) was followed by two book unveiling ceremonies and an Aalmi Mushaira (international poetry symposium), with poets from Pakistan, India, Canada and elsewhere in attendance.
The secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage, Mousa Zaenal Mousa, MFUAQ chairman Mohamed Atiq, and the Pakistani and Indian ambassadors to Qatar presented the 13th annual award to Jameel Jalbi (Pakistan) and Syeda Jaffer (India) for their contribution to the language spoken by millions across South and Central Asia.
Instituted by the Majlis in 1996 out of sheer love for Urdu and its literature, the award carries a gold medal and a cash prize of Rs.150,000 for each winner.
The 2009 awards were decided by two independent juries headed by Mushtaq Ahmed Khan Yousufi, a noted satirist and humorous Urdu scholar in Lahore, and Prof Gopi Chand Narang in New Delhi earlier in January.
Chairman Atiq in his welcoming address thanked the Ministry for its backing, sponsors, guests and the audience.
Mousa while congratulating the winners said the initiative by MFUAQ over a decade ago contributed immensely to Urdu as well as re-enforced Qatar’s presence on the world’s cultural stage.
This was followed by the launch of MFUAQ’s special souvenir.
Over the year’s Majlis has set a tradition to come out with the special supplement that coincides with the annual event and highlights award winners’ life through text and pictures in addition to featuring literature.
Karachi University’s vice-chancellor Dr Peerzada Qasim presided while Mohamed Ali Siddiqui, a scholar and researcher, was the special guest on the occasion.
The first half of the event, was compeered by Shaukat Ali Naz, who’s collection of ghazals (longer-version of poems) ‘Chahaton Ka Khumar’ was unveiled by the dignitaries. The 200-page book is the first for the long-time Doha resident.
Proceedings were then handled by a former Doha resident and teacher, Firtash Syed who’s effort to recollect and document MFUAQ’s activities over the decades in a thesis entitled ‘Majlis Frogh-e-Urdu-Adab Qatar Ki Adbi Khidmat’ was also launched during the event. The around-300 pages book, in Urdu and English is Syed’s fourth.
The Mushaira that followed was conducted by session’s nazim (conductor) Azm Behzad and included Rahat Indori, Waseem Bareilvi, Tahir Faraz, Altaf Zia, Khushbir Singh Shaad and Azra Perveen from India, and Qasim, Murtaza Birlas, Behzad, Fatima Hassan, Inayat Ali Khan and Syed from Pakistan. UK-based poet Prof Safi Hassan and Doha’s Aziz Nabil and Syed Fahimuddin also participated.
Poets also received a memento by MFUAQ towards the end of the event.
