Uganda’s Solomon Mutai won the elite men’s race of the 2024 Doha Marathon by Ooredoo at the Hotel Park area, at the  Doha Corniche, on Friday morning.

The 2015 Beijing Athletics World Championship bronze medallist completed the 42km race in two hours, 12 minutes and 48 seconds. He finished ahead of Eritrean Awet Habte Ghebrezghiabher (2:13:00) and Ethiopia’s Mesfin Negus (2:13:12) respectively.

Kenyan long-distance runner Valary Jemeli Aiyabei took the title in the women’s elite race. The veteran marathoner, who has won marathon gold at Barcelona, Belgrade, Valencia, Prague, Beijing and Frankfurt, added Doha to her list with a time of 2:23:38.

Her compatriot Joan Kipyatich finished second in 2:23:45 while Ethiopia’s Rediet Daniel Molla finished third in 2:26:25.

Ethiopia’s Mersimoy Niguse Alem (2:14:53), Morocco’s Ahmed Elhissouf (2:30:10), and Mohamed Nasir (2:40:26) finished in the top three places in the men’s under-40 marathon race.

More than 13,000 athletes took part in the different races, spread over different distances, on the day. Competitions were held in full marathon, half marathon, 10km, 5km and 1km distances.

A total of 25 world and Olympic athletes took part in the competition this year.

The races, which kicked off at 6.15am, started at the Hotel Park before traversing a scenic route along the picturesque Corniche and finishing at the starting point.

Qatar Athletics Federation President Mohammed Issa Al Fadala said they had big plans for the Doha Marathon in the future.

“We’re cooperating fully with Ooredoo to make this one of the best competitions in the world. The race currently occupies 17th rank, out of 170 marathon races around the world. Our hope is to elevate the Doha Marathon to the Platinum category, the highest ranking in the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races,” he said.

The Doha Marathon by Ooredoo distributed a total prize money of QAR500,000 to the winners.

Overall reasonably well organized.

The half marathon started 7:35am which was too late on a hot day, should have started at least by 7am.

Non participants also were able to collect medals

Snack packs also distributed randomly, many participants did not get one
