Hundreds of thousands of worshippers descended on the holy city of Makkah in Saudi Arabia on Friday as the country geared up for the biggest Hajj pilgrimage in years.

With more than two million pilgrims, from over 160 countries, expected to perform the rites this year, attendance records are set to be broken.

“As the Hajj draws near, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia prepares... for the largest Islamic gathering in history,” Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Hajj and Umrah Tawfiq Al Rabiah said.

The first batch of pilgrims from Qatar has already arrived in Makkah to be a part of one of the world’s biggest annual religious gatherings.

The Department of Hajj and Umrah Affairs at the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, in co-ordination with concerned Saudi authorities, completed all travel procedures for pilgrims.

The Qatar Hajj Mission in the Holy Land and all its supporting units and specialised committees are working together to serve those from the country. Every effort is being taken to help them perform the Fifth Pillar and its rituals in the best of conditions.

Pilgrims from Qatar have been flocking to Makkah to perform Hajj this year. A total of 19 Hajj campaigns have been approved, with each batch of pilgrims arriving either at the King Abdulaziz International Airport or the Pilgrims Airport in Jeddah.

Numerous Qatar-based pilgrims expressed appreciation to the Qatari Hajj Mission for their efforts, praising the ease of various procedures from their arrival at the airport to their residence in Makkah.
