6th FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Stadium completed; venue to host 2021 Amir Cup Final
With a little over a year to go until Qatar hosts the region's first FIFA World Cup, the country is set to mark the completion of its sixth tournament-ready venue, Al Thumama Stadium, next month.
The completion of the Al Thumama stadium follows that of the Khalifa International Stadium in 2017, Al Janoub Stadium in 2019, Education City, Ahmad Bin Ali, and Al Bayt stadiums in 2020.
Despite the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, Qatar made major progress in stadium delivery, with six stadiums fully completed.
The Al Thumama Stadium will be the stage for the 49th Amir Cup Final on October 22, 2021.
Teams Al Sadd and Al Rayyan will clash for the winner's cup at the newly completed 40,000-capacity stadium, the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) announced in a press statement yesterday.
The information regarding ticket sales and stadium fan capacity will be revealed in due course, SC added.
Al Thumama Stadium is steeped in Qatar's and the region's culture, history and symbolism. Designed by renowned Qatari architect Ibrahim M. Jaidah, the stadium will host matches up to and including the quarter-final at the FIFA World Cup 2022.
Located 12 kilometers south of Doha's glittering skyline and seafront promenade, Al Thumama Stadium's design represents the gahfiya, which is a traditional woven cap worn by men and boys across the Middle East and is a sign of dignity and independence.
Once it has served its purpose in FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, the spectacular Al Thumama Stadium will have its capacity halved to meet local needs and provide quality sporting infrastructure to developing nations.
The remaining 20,000-seat arena will be used for football and other sporting events. Moreover, a branch of the world-renowned Aspetar Sports Clinic will open on-site. A boutique hotel will replace the stadium's upper stands.
