Qatar secured its first medal at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games yesterday, with Abdulrahman Abdulqader claiming the bronze of men's F34 shot put event after an impressive 11.36m throw - his season's best.

Jordan's Ahmad Hindi won the gold medal with a new world record of 12.25m, while Morocco's Azeddine Nouiri clinched the silver medal with an effort of 11.55m.

"It's an honor to win a new medal for Qatar as our nation never spare any effort to support its athletes in all sports. I tried my best to claim a medal, and I'm thankful that I managed to win third place and the bronze medal," said Abdulqader, who made history at the 2016 Rio Games, where he won silver to emerge Qatar's first-ever Paralympic medalist.

Abdulqader is one of Qatar's most accomplished Paralympians, having also won the gold medal at the 2017 World Championships in London and the gold medal in the 2014 Incheon Asian Games.

HE President of Qatar Paralympic Committee Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Saud al-Thani expressed delight in the achievements.

He congratulated the Qatari delegation participating in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games and dedicated the accomplishment to the country's wise leadership.

For his part, Executive Director of Qatar Paralympic Committee, Amir al-Mulla, expressed pleasure with the accomplishment, noting that Abdulqader managed to achieve the bronze medal in the shot put in Tokyo despite the strong competition and his injury.

On Thursday, another Qatari shot putter Sara Masoud achieved a season's best of 5.42m. She is the first Qatari woman to win a Paralympic medal, having won silver in the F33 shot put competition at Rio. She had also won silver in the 2017 IAAF World Championships in London, gold in the 2014 Incheon Asian Games, and silver in the 2018 Asian Paralympic Games in Jakarta.

A total of 4,403 athletes from 160 countries participated in 539 events of 22 sports disciplines at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games that started on August 24 and ends today.
