MoPH explains 'Long-COVID' and its symptoms

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Qatar's Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) has been giving it all to ensure the health and safety of the country's citizens and residents.
In addition to making sure that there are dedicated facilities to manage, treat COVID-19 patients, the ministry has been working on raising awareness on the illness as well as caution segments of the community most at risk.
Just yesterday, the country's Minister of Public Health stressed that those aged 60 or above and those with chronic conditions must get vaccinated at the earliest possible to reduce the risk of chronic COVID-19 syndrome.
Today, in a post on its Twitter page, MoPH explained what is meant by Long-COVID, also called the post-COVID-19 syndrome.
This is "a term used to describe COVID-19 symptoms that continue to affect people for many weeks or months after contracting the virus," the Ministry said.

Extreme tiredness, shortness of breath, joint pain, chest pain or tightness are among some of the known symptoms of Long-COVID. Other symptoms also include depression and anxiety as well as insomnia.
Regarding those at risk, the Ministry said, "most people recover quickly from COVID-19, anyone can experience the ongoing symptoms of Long-COVID. Due to their increased vulnerability and often weakened immune systems, the elderly are more susceptible to long-term complications due to COVID-19."
About ways to prevent Long-COVID, MoPH underlined that the best form of prevention is to follow all steps to reduce the risk of contracting COVID-19: wear a mask, maintain physical distance, avoid large gatherings, and regular hand washing.
"It is also important that people who experience signs and symptoms of COVID-19 do not delay seeking help. The sooner medical teams can begin treating the symptoms, the higher the chance of avoiding complications," the Ministry added.
