Food security has been one of the prominent areas of focus for Qatar, even more so since the illegal blockade went into effect nearly three years ago.

In addition to diversifying its import sources, the country has been working diligently to bolster local food production in a bid to meet the needs of the citizens and residents.

Earlier, in March, Qatar's Government Communications Office (GCO) highlighted that the country maintained its position of first in the Arab world in the Economist’s Food Security Index for 2019.

As it continues to harness all its energies to achieve greater food security under the National Food Security Strategy, it has introduced several initiatives to help market locally-grown products that continue to witness greater demand.

Yesterday, the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) announced that nearly 3,288 tonnes of locally-produced vegetables were sold in Qatar in April, under the marketing initiatives: the Qatar Farms and Premium Qatari Vegetables.

These products have been sold at major retail outlets across the country under programs run by MME in conjunction with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

The marketing programs are designed to enhance the marketing of Qatari vegetables and increase their demand.

The locally-grown vegetables are marketed and sold at different consumer complexes and retail outlets in the country including LuLu Hypermarket, Carrefour, Al Meera, and Family Food Centre.

The programs also seek to support farmers by allowing them to sell their high-quality products at reasonable prices directly to consumers without any intermediary and or any fees.

Earlier, in April, Mahaseel had also announced marketing 10 million kilos of vegetables in the local market in the current agricultural season.

These initiatives have reflected in the continuous availability of food products, particularly at this time, as the world grapples with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis.

Meanwhile, health authorities in the country continue to implement the highest level of monitoring, detection, and management procedures to deal with the virus, the public has been advised to follow certain measures to safeguard their health.

For any queries, or concerns related to COVID-19 in Qatar, the public can contact a 24/7 hotline set up by the Ministry. The hotline number is 16000 and is toll-free.

Here's everything you need to know about the virus, including ways to protect yourself.
