89 percent of COVID-19 cases in Qatar mild, only 3 percent serious: HE Lolwah Al-Khater

Addressing a press conference yesterday, Her Excellency the Spokesperson of the Supreme Committee for Crisis Management Lolwah Al Khater shared some statistics about the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in Qatar.
Until now, Qatar has recorded a total of 835 confirmed COVID-19 cases, out of which 54 were detected in the last 24 hours. So far, 71 patients have recovered from the infection.
More than 24,000 people have undergone COVID-19 testing in the country.
Out of all confirmed COVID-19 cases, 89 percent are categorized as ‘mild,’ while only three percent fall under the ‘critical’ category, HE Al Khater mentioned.

Eight percent of recoveries have been observed.
At least 84 percent of cases have been traced from inside quarantine, HE the Spokesperson stated.
This “means the mechanism of quarantine and idea of quarantine practice is working well,” she said.
She also mentioned that about 16 percent of COVID-19 cases were recorded out of quarantine.
Regarding the demise of two COVID-19 patients in the country, HE Al Khater said, “unfortunately there are two cases of death recorded, who were over 55 years. One was aged 56 suffering from chronic diseases like blood pressure and diabetes and other 58, suffering from renal failure.”
Currently, 37 cases are receiving intensive care in ICU, while 12 cases had been discharged earlier.
In terms of age and gender among the current COVID-19 cases in Qatar, HE Al Khater mentioned the following:
- 89 percent of cases are of men, while 11 percent are of females
- Cases among Qatari women: 47; cases among Qatari men: 65
- Cases among expatriate women: 48; cases among expatriate men: 685
- 31 percent of cases are from the age group of 25 – 34-year-olds
- 25 percent of the cases are among the age group of 35 to 44-year-olds
- 18 percent of the cases are from the age group of 45 to 54 years olds
- 10 percent of the cases are from the age group of 55 to 64 years olds
- Only three percent of the cases are above 64 years of age
- In terms of recovery, the statistics reveal a 70 percent recovery in infected males and 21 percent in females.
During the press conference, HE Al Khater also mentioned that the increased number of cases being recorded could be attributed to two factors. One is that many Qatari citizens are returning home, and the other is that the country is using a new device for speedy and timely detection, which allows for greater accuracy and efficiency of testing.

"Only three percent of the cases are above 64 years of age." That's no surprise because Qatar sends people over 64 back home to their countries.
