1.  Qatar Motor Show 2018

Where: Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre, West Bay

Dates: 17th – 21st October

Times:  2pm – 10pm (18-20th October)

Petrol heads get ready the Qatar Motor Show opens to the public this weekend!  Showcasing top sports, luxury and mid-range motors from the leading international car-makers, this event is an unmissable date on the calendar for car lovers and trade professionals.

This year the Motor Show celebrates its 8th Edition, the theme of which is ‘Driving to Innovation’.  QMS organisers hope that the exhibition theme will help to bring the latest trends and technologies, from the global automotive scene, to the many enthusiasts in Qatar.  This year's exhibition is the first to be held under QMS’ new strategy, which aims to provide richer content, with a focus on innovation and sustainability.

Exhibitors will include BMW, Chevrolet, Harley Davidson, Jaguar Land Rover, Mercedes, Mitsubishi, Toyota and Nissan, to name but a few.  The event will also host stands from various other traders, dealers, and automotive companies and services.  Several activities and events will also be organised on the side-lines of QMS to ensure an engaging and exciting experience for visitors.

2.  Cultural Diversity Festival

Where: Katara Cultural Village

Dates: 18th October 2018 – 9th March 2019

Times: 7:30pm – 9:30pm, Thursday and Friday

Join in this celebration of worldwide cultures, artistic and folklore heritage, as the 3rd Edition of this vibrant festival kicks off this weekend, with performances from Qatari (18th) and Indian (18th/19th) artists. 

Over the coming months, Katara will host performers from 18 countries, as they perform traditional songs and dance to promote cultural diversity and cross-cultural understanding and awareness.

Price: Free (performances held in the Amphitheatre)

3.  Dabke Show

Where: Ooredoo Stage, Mall of Qatar, off the Al Rayyan-Dukhan Highway

Dates: 15th – 27th October

Times:  Daily shows at 6pm and 8:30pm

The Mall of Qatar (MOQ) is hosting a Dabke dance troupe for two weeks this October.  Dabke is a traditional Arab folk-dance native to the Levant peoples of the eastern Mediterranean.  The dance, which combines a mixture of circle and line dancing, is traditionally performed at weddings and other auspicious occasions.  The show is fast moving and a spectacle sure to captivate the whole family.

Price: Free at the Ooredoo Stage at the MOQ Oasis.

 

4.  Learn to Write a Novel – 6 Week Writing Course

Where: Maktaba Children’s Library, Al Mabahej and Saha 33, Doha

Dates: Beginning Saturday 20th October and continuing on a weekly basis for 6 weeks.

Times: Adults (18+) course – 10am – 11am / Teenagers course – 11:30am – 12:30pm 

For all those budding novelists out there, starting this weekend Maktaba Children’s Library is offering a six-week writing course for adults and teenagers.  The course has been designed to guide participants through the various stages of novel writing, from the story concept, through to publishing the completed works.  The course is delivered by Qatar based author, Johanna Handley – author of numerous children’s books and novels, including the psychological thriller, The Burning of Juniper Slaide.

The course will introduce the basic elements of creative writing (genre, target audience, generating ideas, constructing a voice), creating characters and context, dealing with conflict and contrast, creating a ‘hook’ and a ‘story’, the importance of editing, and how to publish.

5.  Mounira Al Solh Art Exhibition

Where: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Education City, Doha

Dates: 17th October 2018 – 16th February 2019

Times: 7am – 7pm, Thursday and Saturday / 1:30pm – 7pm Friday

Culture vultures will be pleased to hear that The Arab Museum of Modern Art open their doors this week to the first exhibitions of the fall season.  In particular, the modern and current ‘I strongly believe in our right to be frivolous’ exhibition by Lebanese artist Mounira Al Solh.  Showcasing drawings and embroideries that document private encounters and conversations with those fleeing war in Syria, the exhibition is guaranteed to be a thought-provoking interpretation on the impact of migration, displacement, conflict and resistance on our world.
