
Leading Qatari actor and playwright Abdulaziz Jassim passes away after illness

Qatar is a country which promotes talented people in the field of art and entertainment.
And in Qatar, there was no bigger or more famous actor than 61-year-old Abdulaziz Jassim, who passed away in Bangkok, Thailand, after suffering from a brief illness.
Jassim, who began acting in 1977 with the Al Sadd Theatre, has for long been considered as one of the strongest pillars of Qatari and Gulf theatre, according to Gulf Times.

After joining forces with Ghanem Al Sulaiti, they developed a comedy duet which performed successfully in the country for many years.
Jassim boasted of a very rewarding career which spanned Qatari theatre, radio as well as television. He was also known in the wider Gulf region, thanks to productions from other countries as well.

Abdul Aziz wrote and acted in his last play — Deira Ezz — in November 2017, alongside a number of actors from Qatari theatre. The play, which was based on the blockade of Qatar, was directed by Saad Al Burshid and received rave reviews from the public and critics alike, according to The Peninsula.
Abdulaziz acted in more than 30 plays and also acted in more than 50 television dramas.

Several public figures and officials expressed deep condolences over his passing.
“There’s no doubt that Qatari artiste Abdulaziz Jassim’s demise will leave its impact on the Qatari and Gulf art scene and in the hearts of the people of Qatar and the Gulf. Our heartfelt condolences to his family and all his loved ones,” Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani noted on Twitter.

Abdul Aziz was beloved because he addressed everyday issues faced by people, particularly the middle classes, while defending their political, economic and social rights.
Lights were switched off at Qatar National Theatre last evening as a mark of respect to Abdulaziz.
