Ongoing Gulf crisis could affect regional security and stability, says NHRC chief

It has been more than a year since the illegal siege of Qatar was launched by neighbouring countries, but a resolution is still nowhere on the horizon.

Despite repeated attempts by Qatar, the blockading quartet of nations have not shown any interest in crisis resolution.

The visible lack of intervention by the international community to resolve the ongoing GCC crisis could affect the security and stability of the region, said Dr Ali bin Smaikh Al Marri, Chairman of Qatar’s National Human Rights Committee (NHRC), according to Qatar Tribune.

He said the crisis, which has affected thousands of families across the Gulf region.would create new hotspots for conflict and undermine international counter-terrorism efforts.

Dr Al Marri made these observations during a meeting with US Senate’s Chairman of the Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs Ron Johnson in Washington yesterday.

He discussed with Johnson the latest developments and challenges posed by the blockade.

Dr Al Marri said he regretted some governments around the world considering the GCC crisis as a political dispute, without actually understanding the severe human rights violations it has caused.

“These violations are destroying the social fabric of the GCC, giving rise to a culture of incitement and threatening the stability of the region. It also undermines international efforts by the US and other world governments to enhance security,” he said.
