It was only recently that the Hamad Medical Corporation decided to make all cancer treatments in the country free of charge for nationals and expatriates.

Now, the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) has reportedly asked private healthcare providers to reduce their service fees and charges by 10 to 60%, reported Gulf Times.

The newspaper quoted a medical source as saying that the ministry would link the renewal of a private health facility’s licence to abiding by the decision. Accordingly, the licence will not be renewed if the healthcare provider does not reduce its charges, according to Arabic daily Arrayah.

The source added that a number of private healthcare providers will meet next week at Qatar Chamber to discuss the ministry’s directives.

More than a month ago, Arrayah published a report on the public’s view about the charges at private hospitals and clinics. In it, many people had complained about exorbitant rates healthcare providers were charging for even urgent services.

In particular, Qataris had demanded a ceiling on the charges for each service while exercising tighter control on the process by the authorities concerned to save the public from any potential exploitation.

Further, they told the daily that some private health facilities ask for unnecessary checkups and tests just to maximise their profits. This should be subject to closer supervision by the department concerned, Arrayah added.

I know of one clinic with very good service that charges a reasonable consultation fee. That clinic is Naseem Al Rabeeh Medical Centre located at C Ring road opposite Gulf Times. They charge just QR 50 which is very reasonable for the service they provide. They also have a large panel of doctors available.

Hamad clinics have long queue and time delay. Out patients need to stay at least 3 to 4 hrs in Hamad clinics whereas in private hospitals its less 30 min or little.
