Number of radars on Qatar’s roads set to be doubled, distance between radars to halve

Unruly driving, wrong parking, overtaking through the wrong side, over-speeding and tailgating are some common experiences anyone with a car in Qatar should have experienced at least once on the roads.
Qatar’s Traffic Department has been hitting violators with hefty fines and black marks in an effort to cut down on the menace. They also installed advanced traffic cameras throughout the length and breadth of the country.
They are now tightening the net further by getting ready to almost double the number of traffic cameras around the nation, reported The Peninsula.
Once the work on installing more cameras is complete, the distance between speed radars will drop to 2.5km instead of the current 5km.
“Currently, the distance between radars is 5km and it gives motorists a chance to speed. When the distance between two radars decrease, the motorists will be forced to observe speed limits,” said Brigadier Mohammed Saad Al Kharji, Director of the General Directorate of Traffic.
He said his department was working to double the number of radars in the coming days.
Al Kharji said that a special team from the General Directorate of Traffic, along with The Public Works Authority ‘Ashghal’ and the National Traffic Safety Committee, study about speed limit before enforcing them on Qatar’s roads.
New amendments to traffic law
Under new amendments, riders in the backseats will have to wear belt. He said that while the majority of vehicles were found free of damages after accidents, riders had serious injuries. This is because not wearing seat belt caused their forced escape from the vehicle.
The new amendments may witness increase in fines on some violations, especially those which cause accidents.

Means we will have full protocol when they would malfunction in extreme summer.
I hope they do install the speed radars ASAP on the G-Ring road. Now it is a RACE TRACK for most of the vehicles including construction pickups, SUVs, vans, mini-buses, buses and even heavy trucks. Here the construction pickups are worse than the SUVs and the drivers even overtake from the extreme left beyond the fast lane almost hitting the median railings.
