Top UAE official admits GCC crisis was manufactured to take 2022 WC away from Qatar

No one can hide the truth indefinitely, goes an old saying.

The same seems to have been proven true in the case of the illegal blockade of Qatar, which has now entered its fourth month.

A recent tweet by a top UAE official has confirmed what many suspected for a long time — that the Gulf crisis was manufactured to take the 2022 FIFA World Cup away from Qatar.

Lt. Gen. Dhahi Khalfan, Head of General Security for the Emirate of Dubai tweeted on Sunday: “If the World Cup leaves Qatar, the crisis will go away ... because the crisis is created to break it.”

Observers have pointed out that this was the most explicit confirmation of the blockading countries’ hostile attitude towards Qatar’s ambitious efforts to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup, reported Gulf Times.

The scam is a clear indication of the fact that the media from these countries continue to launch campaigns spreading fake news and false accusations aimed at 2022 FIFA World Cup, The Peninsula said, citing the tweet.

Earlier, Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy Secretary General Hassan Al Thawadi had said that the World Cup was not under any threat.

Observers felt that Lt. Gen Khalfan’s remarks are an open confession that the siege nations fabricated the present crisis with a view to making things difficult for Qatar to organise the World Cup.

“The cat is now out of the bag,” a Doha-based observer said, adding “a person like Khalfan could not keep the secret for long and his words have now unmasked the hidden agenda of the siege nations.”

The Emirati official is known in the region for his outspoken tweets.

But after realising his tweet has come under massive attack for his candid confession, Khalfan returned to Twitter to write that his tweets were his ‘personal analysis.’

“My personal analysis of the financial pressure Doha faces in hosting the games had been misunderstood,” he explained.

When asked about Khalfan's comments, FIFA said : “We do not comment on speculation.”
