Woman who found £20 on the floor ended up with a criminal record for pocketing it

A woman has ended up with a criminal record after she found £20 on the floor and put it in her pocket.
Nicole Bailey, 23, who has no previous conviction was caught on CCTV, tracked down by police and hauled before the courts on a theft charge.
She initially denied she had taken it but after being presented with the footage she admitted what she had done.
The money belonged to a man who withdrew the cash at One Stop in Blurton, Stoke-on-Trent.
However, he dropped it and told staff when he realised he had lost it but the money was nowhere to be seen.
Now police have warned people to forget the old ‘finders keepers’ saying it’s a crime to keep money or goods someone else has lost.
Staffordshire Police Chief Inspector Karen Stevenson, said: ‘We would actively encourage any member of the public who picks up money that has been dropped to be honest and do the right thing by taking all reasonable steps to try and find the owner.’
So, what say you… Is it right for the police to prosecute her and treat her as a thief ?
Brit, AS I wish to add more value but Mods regularly remove my comments, they target me ............
Correct, .............................
whatever happens to finders keepers?. I think that if you see someone dropping money and you take the money then you should be accountable. If you don't see them then you can keep it.
We breath in the air while walking on the footpath ....... so one day we will get fined for inhaling too fast ? ....... .... and we would be asked to RETURN the excess oxygen back to the atmosphere ............. ........
Easy things are being done by most of the people in this world but for the difficult & complex ones ... nobody cares ....... ...... ....
For me Ms Bailey is like a fresh ROSE ........ ...... I respect & regard her as fine being ......... .......
To bad on the police part for not punishing a person who was careless with his money. He should get double the fine BP 350 /- for hurting an innocent soul like Ms Bailey. ........... He should be treated as if he has abandoned his 20 { Twenty } kids on the road ...............
Ms Bailey has been given a conditional discharge and was ordered to pay £175 in costs and charges. However, she will get a criminal record against her name
Treating her as a criminal is a bit harsh. But it will serve as an example for others. Hope she is not handed over a stiff punishment.
