1. MoI announces three-month amnesty for illegal residents

Qatar’s Ministry of Interior, for the first time in 12 years, announced a three-month amnesty period for illegal residents of the country. An official pardon will be accorded to those who come forward and they can go home.

 

2. Massive Sandstorm hits Doha!

A freak event of nature hit Doha last week in the form of a massive sandstorm. It was one of the biggest in recent memory. Soon, social media was overflowing with pictures and videos. We compiled some of them.

 

3. For the second year in a row, Qatar will impose a 10-day alcohol ban during Eid Al Adha

For the second year, Qatar’s hotels will not serve alcohol for a 10-day period leading up to and including Eid Al Adha. This is likely to generate a lot of discussions in the coming days.

 

4. Qatari athletes return from Rio Olympics with their heads held high

Qatar may have won only one silver at the Rio Games, but it was still the country’s first. Most athletes gave a good account of themselves and several made it to the top-10 in their respective events.

 

5. Complaints by three people must to register food poisoning cases

There has been a spate of recent incidents of food poisoning in restaurants. Officials have clarified that at least three people needs to be affected before a food poisoning case can be charged against an establishment.

7. Qatar Investment Authority buys a piece of Empire State Building

The Qatar Investment Authority has made its presence felt all over the world. The recent buy of an almost 10% stake in the parent company that owns the Empire State Building is one of its most impressive acquisitions.
