Two explosions shook the city of Qatif in eastern Saudi Arabia, where many of the kingdom's Shi'ite Muslim minority live, and witnesses said body parts could be seen in the area of the blast.

A witness said one explosion destroyed a car parked near a mosque, followed by another explosion just before 7 pm local time. Body parts could be seen and they are believed to be that of an attacker, the witness added.

Photographs purporting to be of the incident published on Twitter showed a severed leg and crowds gathered outside a mosque at dusk. Some posts said the explosion was caused by a suicide attacker setting off a bomb.

Reuters could not immediately verify the images or confirm the information.

The incident happened just hours after a suicide bomber was killed and two people were wounded in a blast near the US consulate in the kingdom's second city of Jeddah on Monday.

It was the first bombing in years to attempt to target foreigners in the kingdom. There was no immedaite claim of responsibility for the Jeddah attack.

Islamic State has carried out a series of bombing and shooting attacks in Saudi Arabia since mid-2014 that have killed scores of people, mostly members of the Shi'ite Muslim minority and security services.

Brit: Makkah and Medina are crowded cities during the holy month of Ramadan. The aim of terrorist is not just to cause material damage, but to kill as many people as they can. Also, with Eid around the corner, possibly they want to create a sense of fear among the Muslims who would go to the Prophet's mosque in large numbers for Eid prayers, and put additional pressure on security agencies to prevent such attacks from taking place.

From the past incidents in a country like Pakistan which has faced innumerable terrorist attacks, terrorists have targeted churches, mosques, schools, bazaars, etc. which are termed as "soft targets." The sole aim is to kill and maim as many people as possible and create an atmosphere of fear among the Muslims.

Those behind this terrible act of terrorism are misguided and wrong in their thinking. Muslims from across the world will fearlessly go to the Prophet's mosque on any day of the year. The love of the Prophet will take them there without they caring for their lives, and that includes me as well.

Shouldn't there be a betting site on Jihadi terrorism based out of London? They will make more money than football bets. ;-)

Yes, it has been reported that four policemen died in the Medina explosion with several cars catching fire. The timings of the attack by the terrorists and the city chosen as their target needs noting down. Medina is a very peaceful city. It has never witnessed any form of violence, The Prophet's mosque is packed with pilgrims during the month of Ramadan.
