Brit: That is why I carry so much respect for you and some QLers who stand far above many who post simply crap. Yes, a lovely and very truthful quote from a great poet.
I agree with you Accha. Urdu has got nothing to do with Islam. Regarding Galib or Haali or Iqbal or Mir Taqi Mir- they belonged to undivided India which includes Pakistan. So both the countries own them.
Urdu language is in 8th schedule of Indian constitution as one of the 24 officially recognized language. There are Urdu universities in India fully funded by central govt. Some of the states have Urdu as second official language. Jammu & Kashmir has Urdu as official language despite the fact none of the communities in my state speak Urdu as mother tongue.
These days some people refer Urdu/Hindi as 'Hindustani'. They are trying to find a common ground.
Hindi is Urdu with more Sanskrit words where as Urdu is Hindi with more Persian and Arabic words.
Mufti Shahid: Yes, it undoubtedly is. All Indian films are made in the Urdu language but labelled as Hindi. This is possibly because many of the "uneducated" feel that Urdu is the language of the Qur'an and the Muslims due the fact the Urdu language has the same script as Arabic plus many of its own letters which are not present in Arabic. What they do not know or ever care to know, is that the Urdu language was born in India itself. The word "Urdu" means "caravan." The language developed due to the interaction of traders from the Middle East, Persia, Turkey etc who traveled to India centuries ago for trade. That is the reason why the language has many words of Arabic, Persian, Turkish etc. Some of the great Urdu poets such as Ghalib and Haali were Indians. Poets Hasrat Jaipuri, Shakeel Badayuni and several others who wrote songs for the Indian films and writers such as Munshi Premchand were all from India.

Brit: Here is one such stanza from Iqbal's poetry:
Utho meri dunyA ke gariboN ko jagA do
KAkh-e-umrA ke dar-o-deewAr hilA do.....
Jis khet se dehkAN ko muyassar na ho rozi
Us khet ke har khosha-e-gandam ko jalA do
Rise and rouse my world’s wretched ones
Shake fiercely the palaces of the rich ones
Scorch every cluster of wheat in the field
That denies livelihood to the tilling ones
Iqbal is highly regarded in the UK..
I always remember one of his quotes from my younger days as an idealistic socialist :O)
Nations are born in the hearts of poets, they prosper and die in the hands of politicians.
Mufti Shahid: Simply great!
