A total of 97 Indians have died so far this year in Qatar, the Indian embassy informed at the monthly community house on Thursday.

The number of deaths registered at the embassy during the whole of 2015 and 2014 was 279 each.

While 129 Indians are housed at the Central Prison, 103 are awaiting deportation, it was informed. A team from the embassy recently visited the Deportation Centre and Central Prison to inquire about the welfare of its nationals, the house was told.

So far this year, the Labour and Community Welfare Section of the embassy received a total of 1,482 complaints.

On receiving requests from the local authorities, the embassy issued 33 emergency certificates (EC) this month to facilitate the return travel of its nationals stranded in the country. The embassy also issued 19 air tickets to Indian nationals in distress this month.

The Indian Community Benevolent Forum gave away three air tickets to the destitute workers this month.

Besides ambassador Sanjiv Arora, deputy chief of mission R K Singh and other officials met all the complainants on Thursday. ICBF president Arvind Patil also attended the session.
