Speeding car kills Filipina nurse, injures colleague in Abu Hamour
A speeding car killed a Filipina nurse and injured another at Abu Hamour in Doha, the Philippine Overseas Labour Office (POLO) told The Gulf Times.
Based on reports received from reliable sources, labour attache David Des Dicang said that 30-year-old Cheryl Mae Ayugat Wawey died on the spot, while Celeste Mamon Centino, 28, was taken to the Hamad General Hospital with injuries. She is stable now.
The POLO official said the Filipinas, employees of Naseem Al Rabeeh Medical Centre for about two years now, were on their way home from work at Premium Naseem Al Rabeeh Medical Centre when they were hit by the vehicle near the Dar Al Salam Mall around 8pm. The nationality of the suspect is yet to be identified.
Centino, believed to be a resident of Mindoro in the Philippines, is recovering at the intensive care unit of the HGH, according to Dicang.
The body of Wawey, a resident of Baguio and an active member of one of the Filipino organisations in Doha, is in the hospital morgue.
Families and relatives of the victims had already been contacted, according to POLO. The Philippine embassy is now awaiting the results of the police investigation.
Based on POLO records, the two nurses had recently returned from their vacation back home, Dicang said.
As a legitimate member of the Overseas Workers Welfare Office, Wawey’s heirs are entitled to receive financial and livelihood assistance from the Philippine government.
Dicang has advised his compatriots to be alert when crossing or walking in the streets so as not to be taken off-guard.
“However in this case, it can be said that our young compatriots followed the traffic signs," he added.

Indeed a very tragic incident and may the soul of the deceased rest in peace. My prayers are with lady who is in hospital for her quick recovery
Sulieman has a silver Tiida... I pray that he is well
Yeah, the cars are still there. But no driver is to be seen.
I saw the cars of this accident, in front of Dar Asalam mall yesterday, one black chevy Camaro hit a silver Tiida, a totally damaged cars. Can't imagine what was the speed of the Black ones when you see the wreckage
May Cheryl Mae's soul rest in peace and hope Celeste Mamon Centino makes a speedy recovery.
I hope both of them get justice and the culprit apprehended/punished to the full extent of his crime.
I must agree with Equin0x. Really sad news:(
everyone should take care while crossing the streets of Doha, be it on pedestrian lanes or non-pedestrian lanes. A lot of High Speeding Land Cruisers might hit you!
Riyal2Rupee: read the 1st part of his sentence, 2nd part is to look balanced.
why i have a very big feeling it was a LAND CRUISER !!
How truly unfortunate. Condolences to the family.
Mufti, I think Prize has wished the lady to recover fast & have a fine health back soon. Nobody should blame the victim.
MM is an expert in journalism too, I thought he's only a good doctor, advocate, diet specialist , financial consultant among other talents, ha ha ha.
\\Be it home, work or road we 'r responsible for ourselves. It pains to loose a good fellow, hope the other lady gets fine quickly.//
ya blame the victim.
Ya, That was there but for a brief period.
Some years back there were instances where a person would purposely fall in front of your car & would ask for a compensation for mutual justice ............... but that was long time back many - many KMs away from our shores ......
According to Doha News it was a 'hit-and-run accident. Now we can call it a crime. And the criminal is still driving around in Doha!
Be it home, work or road we 'r responsible for ourselves. It pains to loose a good fellow, hope the other lady gets fine quickly.
"The nationality of the suspect is yet to be identified".............I guess it's a case of Hit & Run otherwise, identifications by nationality shouldn't be a big deal for the Police.
May her soul rest in peace. Hope that the driver is caught and punished. Reckless driving is very common here.
Very sad to know about it, would be tough for their loved ones. We should take extra care at road crossings.
Both parties must take utmost care on the road, out attention / reflexes are lowered with fatigue or weather ............ May the departed soul rest in peace an Celeste Centino recover soon ....... we share the grief with their families & colleagues and employers ..............
I just hope that this incident will be dealt accordingly and justly, regardless of the nationality of the victim specially the accused murderer.
I would suggest better enforcement of existing laws and harsher punishments for all
Speed kills, and the drivers under the age of 30 are the most dangerous while driving.
There is a need to lower the speed limit on many main roads in order to avert killings on the road.
May she rest in peace and may her friend make a full recovery.
Why no mention of the type of car, any eye witness statements ?
