Al Rayyan rises from the ashes to re-live a dream, 21 years on!
DOHA: Nothing can stop a team whose time has come.
Just two seasons ago, Qatar’s hardcore fans had bemoaned the fall of legendary club Al Rayyan from top tier football in the country.
After spending a year in relegation hell, they re-entered the Qatar Stars League and wasted no time in winning the title, after a long 21-year gap.
And they did it in great style, humiliating Al Wakrah 5-0 and sealing the deal with five rounds still left to play. It was the club’s 20th win, from 21 rounds.
Rayyan’s last league title came way back in the 1994-95 season. To get a full sense of how long back that was, think of these other ‘famous incidents.’
* The World Trade Organisation was formed
* The last episode of Full House was aired
* Superman actor Christopher Reeve got paralysed after being thrown from his horse
* In a symbolic win for a post-apartheid nation, South Africa beat the All Blacks to win the Rugby World Cup. The events around the famous win was portrayed in the movie Invictus
* Auction site eBay went live for the first time
* The animated hit movie Toy Story released for the first time
* Operation Desert Storm officially ended
* The final Calvin & Hobbes strip was published
Congratulations to Al Rayyan’s fans for sticking with their team through thick and thin!
