Dear All

My car istemara expired on 20/02/2016 and Insurance also expired on 20/02/2016. I am in the one month grace period for istemara provided by Traffic department. But I met with Car accident today. My friend MC told me that my insurance company will provide 1 month grace period and hence can claim from insurance. Is MC correct or is he mad.

just want to ask some question, if you driving a car with expired istemara but the insurance is not expired...is there's a fine if the traffic police caught you in check point?

Dear Khan,

I went through same situation. My istemara was expired and insurance as well and met with an accident after one month of the expiry. It depends on who is at mistake . In my case it was the second party. If it is the second party then no worries, just go to the insurance company and claim it but if you are at mistake then you will have to repair at least his car at your own expense. But as said in the comments you should never drive a vehicle with expired insurance. suppose you would have killed a someone in an accident and your insurance is expired, then you would have to pay Qr.2,00,000 from your pocket. so avoid such mistake next time and renew it on time.

Khan: I have checked with a reputed insurance company and was advised that you will have to bear the entire cost of repairs for both sides. You should not have been driving a car with an expired insurance. I now stand corrected.

You will have to bear booth expenses, other parties Car repair and your car repair.

You shouldn't let your insurance expired, insurance can be renewed anytime before its expiration, even you have your isthimara done or not. Insurance co, will able to accept it.

Surprisingly, MM has not come up so far with his usual expert advice on this matter!

You should not ask MC, you should ask MM!

If police report puts the fault on you, then you will land up paying for repairs of both vehicles. In case, the report places the full blame on the other side, the other car's insurance company will repair your car and you may be saved from expenses.

Unfortunately this is the risk when Istemara expires.

The Insurance company will probably not cover you. I suppose the overall outlay depends on the police report. However the likelyhood is that you will end up paying for the repair of both vehicles.

If your insurance has expired, the insurance company will not provide any cover and all damages must be covered by you alone. Your friend is wrong.
