Family law asked to be revised as divorce rate increase in the country

Amid an increasing rate of divorce in Qatar, sections of legal practitioners are calling for a revision of the family law.

They demand that the role of the family consultancy centre is strengthened to solve marital disputes amicably to help lighten the burden on courts.

Some 3,200 divorces have taken place while 7,246 marriages have been solemnized in the past two years. Divorces totalled 10,325 over the past decade.

The figures were disclosed by panellists at a seminar organised by Al Sharq newspaper in collaboration with Qatari Lawyers’ Association yesterday.

The panellists cited reasons for the growing divorce rate, including socio-economic factors, interferences by family members of the spouses, difference in economic status of couples and misunderstandings, among others.

A total of 1,090 cases were registered in family courts during the first half of the year, said Naser Mobarak Al Hajri, an expert at Family Consultancy Centre.

There are two types of courts that handle family issues: Juziya (single-judge) and Kulliya (a bench of three judges).

The three-judges bench received 560 cases, including 399 divorces, 51 seeking divorce by women, 13 cases for bearing family expenditures, 82 cases for asking wives to return to homes, six cases of prevention of forced marriage and nine others.

The single-judge court received 478 cases, including 134 for custody of children, 38 to see children, 38 seeking good behaviour, 207 for bearing expenditures, five for prevention of forced marriage, 38 cases for accommodation and 10 others. [The Peninsula]

man its regarding alimony, child custody and everything related to divorce. The law here really screws up them men in case of divorce. There are cases where the men dont want divorce but the wives wants divorce and the men end up paying the wives maintenance and housing for the rest of their lives.

why would a husband pay for his wife if she is asking for the divorce for the silliest reasons.

there is no communication between the families. if they talk, it becomes a quarrel, may be.

the other i was at a restaurant with my family and my sisters family including kids. on the next table we had a family of 5 or 6 members all occupied on the mobile phones. the kid while he wanted to talk, his sister or mother handed him too a mobile to be engaged.

they were not looking at each other or talking. felt really sad and bad bout the situation.

other fact is most of the time, either husband is travelling or when he come back wife travels. less meetings at home.

Ishu, It's not like that the divorces are from the same couples who married in the last two years . It's from the older marriages actually.

Yes, It's surprising when we are unable to forgive our life partners for their small mistakes or childhood habits.

Normally it's very very minute subjects where we get angry from eachothers' behaviour.

The law needs to be revised urgently. The law is the main reason for divorce. Can you believe that if the wife asks for divorce even then the husband has to provide for her accommodation and maintenance. What kinda of a screwed up law is this. Even the custody is solely granted to the wives. The husbands can see their children for only 1-2 hours in the whole week. No wonder this law is being used by women to harass their husbands and to extort money from them. A lot has been written against the law and this is the right time to change it.
