Doha, 7th July 2015: Representatives from Education Above All Foundation (EAA) are travelling today from Doha to attend the two-day Oslo Summit on Education for Development in Norway. The Oslo Summit will build on the conclusions reached at the World Education Forum In Korea in May 2015, which was also attended by a delegation from Education Above All. The Summit will aim to stimulate domestic resource mobilisation, as well as promote the use of innovative partnerships and coordinated aid for education. The Summit will address the need for renewed political commitment in order to reach the remaining 58 million children who are denied their right to a quality primary education.

The Oslo Summit and its outcomes will be followed by the third International Conference on Financing for Development in Ethiopia in July 2015, and the UN General Assembly in New York in September, where the Sustainability Development Goals will be adopted. Representatives from Education Above All, as well as from Educate A Child (EAC), EAA’s global programme, will attend both events in order to continue discussions on the importance of ensuring that the 58 million children who remain out of school are not left behind.

Education Above All has recently signed agreements with the French Development Agency and the Korea International Cooperation Agency to collaborate and engage in projects and activities that support access to primary education. These projects will contribute to the reduction of the number of out of school children. Education Above All has also signed a number of partnerships in Qatar, including the 24th Men’s Handball World Championship, the Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club, Qatar Insurance Company, W Doha Hotel, K108 Hotel, Ali Bin Naser Al Misnad Transport & Trading, among others. Donations from EAA’s generous partners have contributed towards the achievement of Educate A Child’s aim to provide access to quality primary education to 10 million children by 2016.

Commenting on the Oslo Summit on Education for Development, Marcio Barbosa, CEO at Education Above All, said: “These final months before the adoption of the Sustainability Development Goals in September are crucial to ensuring measures are put into place to improve the quality of education and ensure access to education is given to the most marginalised children around the world. Meetings such as the Oslo Summit and the forthcoming Conference on Financing for Development provide the global education community valuable opportunities to identify the best practice and financing models to reach the 58 million children who remain out of school.”

At the end of this year, the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) will come to an end, including MDG2, which looks at ensuring universal primary education is guaranteed. There remain 58 million out of school children worldwide, and this is now a critical time to ensure those hard to reach children who remain out of school are not forgotten. A final push is needed by the global community, both financial and political, to ensure the completion of the unfinished MDG2.
