Buy or rent car plus insurance

Hi guys,

Moving with my family to Doha in September and looking for advice regarding cars.

I have a UK driving license, which I know can be converted to Qatari license. Just having a look on transportation. The company will pay me 600USd per month to cover transport (around 2100 QAR?).

Is it worth buying a car or should I just rent?. Ideally would want a 4 X 4, how much would these cost to buy?. And what is the cost of insurance?.

If I choose the renting option, is 2100 QAR a month enough?. I assume I wont have to pay any insurance if I rent?.

Many Thanks

My suggestion is that you buy one rather than take one on rent. There are several reasons to this. First, you may not be able to get a 4 x 4 within QR 2100 per month from any of the rent-a-car companies here. A sedan usually costs around QR 1800 per month on rent. If you choose to buy a new car, you save much on maintenance for the first couple of years. Then whenever you are leaving Qatar, you can sell the vehicle. Some brands such as Toyota and Nissan have good resale value and also find buyers quickly. As for the insurance part, there are two types of car insurance here. One is the third party and the other is the comprehensive. For third party insurance the rates have been fixed by the government and all insurance companies will charge you the same price irrespective which one you choose. However, the charges vary and they are based on the engine capacity of vehicles. The charges for comprehensive insurance varies from company to company and you need to decide through which company you would like to get your vehicle insured. All vehicles here must carry insurance, It is mandatory. Yes, you are right in that if you take a car on rent, you will not need to pay for insurance or maintenance costs. Cars from rent-a-car companies usually carry third party insurance cover and not a comprehensive cover.

With about 85k cash you can buy a 4x4 like outlander/X-trail. However if you are renting this would cost you roughly 3000-3500 per month. Depending on the employer company, you may get a start up loan with which you may buy a car - that is the best option. If you are going for Rental or Rent-to-Own, please contact us to check our prices and suitability.
