Cabbie gropes teen girl, claims he was joking

This should be a warning to all ladies.. The Cabbie was wrong, but in my opinion the girl should have stayed in the back seat and refused to move.

What say you ?

A taxi driver who allegedly groped a 17-year-old girl college student claimed that he was only joking, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

At around 10pm, after JM, Brazilian, finished her academic day in her college at Global Village, she went out and stopped a taxi to go back home.

“I sat on the back seat and the driver started asking me some personal questions including whether I have a boyfriend and my nationality. I answered his questions. When he reached Dubai Police Academy, he stopped and asked me to sit on the front seat.. Initially, I refused and apologised to him but when he insisted I agreed and moved to the front seat. Because I was next to him, he started groping my legs.

“I put my bag between me and him and told him he should not do that. He told me that it was only a joke and that he did not mean anything bad,” said the student.

However, the taxi driver did not stop and pinched the girl.

“I got very scared and phoned my mother and told her that I am in a taxi and that I will reach home after 5 minutes. When I finished the call, he groped my breast, so I put both my hands on my chest. He asked me to remove my hands but I refused. When I noticed the car’s details in the glass, I noted them down and asked the driver to stop near a supermarket to buy some things. He stopped and got off the car and while doing so he bit my lower back and pinched me. I rushed into the supermarket and stayed there for more than 10 minutes until he left,” said the student.

The girl returned home crying and weeping. She told her mother what happened and the mother lodged a complaint with the police.

Criminal Evidences reported redness in the girl’s lower back.

Police arrested the taxi driver, AH, 31, and the girl recognised him when shown to her via identification parade.

The driver denied groping the girl and claimed that he was only joking.

The court will give its sentence next month.

No need to get all fired up and turn this isolated incident into a politico-religious drama. It was just a dumb street-foolish 17-year old who is learning about the reality of life the hard way. Don't worry, once she recovers from this incident and once she turns 18, she'll go straight register at a Dubai driving school and get her own permit and never ever approach a monster taxi again. And just to be fair to taxi drivers, I have taken tons of taxis in Qatar before getting my driving license, most taxi drivers were very courteous and polite with me except for a taxi driver who almost had a go at me for observing the 'no meter - no pay' Karwa rule though I was only observing the rules! Other than that, they were all nice, polite and professional. Granted, I am no longer 17 years' old...

Ha! Ha! Good to see someone changing his track now calling it "Asian Morals." At least the "Muslim Morals" part has been taken care of! My questions still remain unanswered. Why do western women not sit beside a taxi driver here when they hire one? What stops from doing so? Is it because most taxi drivers here are from the east or from Africa and have a colored skin? No. Females are females irrespective of which part of the world they come from and it is not in their nature to sit next to a taxi driver who they do not know. One needs to be realistic and have an open mind to understand such facts of life!

The so-called "Asian Morals" have no respect for women, that's the problem. If a woman gets raped it's HER fault. That's the way people think here.

I am astonished at the level of intellect on this forum? Its like having a conversation with a bunch of 5 year olds, if its not someone asking the most inane, simple questions, its comments about women asking for trouble by sitting next to a taxi as part of a "devilish plan" its pathetic. For what its worth people all over the world sit next to taxi drivers including me sitting next to a female taxi driver in the UK, i assume that's acceptable? or do you think i was luring her into a improper relationship? The problem i see with this article is that the taxi driver seems to think that by saying it was a joke that everything is OK, nobody has mentioned that!

Take the passenger seat in the front out, paint the taxi pink, and everyone will know it's safe for females.

Acchabaccha, are you suggesting that if my wife sits in the front of a taxi that she wants to have sex with the taxi driver?

By acchabaccha• 31 May 2015 11:45

No, no Mr Wild Turkey! Our morals do not allow a woman sit next to a taxi driver. Allow me to add something that would clear some of the clogging in any one's mind. The morals I have talked of are not "Muslim Morals." They are "eastern morals." No female from India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Pakistan, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Iran, let alone Middle East countries would ever sit beside a taxi driver when they hire one on the roadside. Are the morals of women in all these countries "sick" as you term it to be? I have not seen a Filipino lady sit next to a taxi driver when she hires one. Why? I am yet to see a woman from the west sitting next to a taxi driver here when they hail a cab. What stops them from doing so?? Is it their "good, healthy" morals? There are certain things in life in which morals are not required to rule. Females throughout the world would not sit next to cab driver who she does not know. It is part of their nature. Be realistic!

An "open invitation" to a person who is following "the rules and regulations, culture and traditions and moral values that govern the lives of people in this region." Ha, ha, ha. Maybe he was a Westerner, too. No, he wasn't? Then what happened to the "values and moral" of YOUR society? Your moral is sick!

Let us put this story back into context. 17-year olds today are absolutely clueless about the world, 17-year olds in our region of the world today are even more clueless about the world are they are constantly cocooned by their families, oversurrounded by their parents and do not get a chance to experience the world by themselves and learn how to be street-smart. I absolutely disagree with the unfounded and harsh 'open invitation' argument as I know many teenagers who would have foolishly and innocently done the thing, unsuspecting any foul play being so clueless about the world. Mother slapping her daughter, I pity your daughter if this is what you would have done to her upon her return home shaken and traumatized. By the way, the girl in the article appears to be western from her name and so no need to embark on an endless debate about the traditions of this part of the world as she clearly is not fron this part of the world.

Garabian: Possibly, you belong to that "class" of females who love to sit beside strangers on a taxi or if you are a male, allow their females to sit beside taxi drivers. Unfortunately, you are not aware of the culture and traditions of this part of the world. Any family with moral values here would first question their daughter for this unusual behaviour of hers. Any daughter or female from such families would n-e-v-e-r sit beside a taxi driver, let alone change her seat in the first place. Your post reflects that you are not from the eastern part of the world and are not aware of the rules and regulations, culture and traditions and moral values that govern the lives of people in this region. Also, I have never seen even western females sitting beside taxi drivers when they hire a taxi here. By changing her seat, the girl was deliberately sending an "open invitation" to the taxi driver and lured him into her trap. Possibly, she may have gone a step further which she is not willing to disclose to her mother! Why did she go about crying and complaining later on when she forced temptation to take over the taxi driver? Was it part of a preconceived, devilish plan?

This mindset is very common here. 'Freedom' is a foreign word as well as 'respect'. A female has to follow the rules of the male society. What do you expect?

@Acchabaccha, what a truly absurd statement, you're talking rubbish. Why should the girl be slapped by her mother? It is mental comments like that which drag the Middle East down, the driver should be sacked, jailed and then deported. She lured the taxi driver into a trap!! No decent girl would ever change her seat from the back seat to the front in a taxi, at least not in this part of the world. She too should get questioned as to why she changed her seat. The mother should have slapped the girl and asked her this question. She lured the taxi driver into a trap. When pleasure comes so close, temptations would definitely override. Satan is a master manipulator!
