NHRC to monitor labour camp standards in Qatar
Qatar’s human rights committee is being made part of the monitoring or inspection process involving labour camps to ensure that workers’ basic right to accommodation as per international standards are not flouted. The National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) was already a part of the team of representatives from the various government ministries and agencies that framed the guidelines for labour camps.
So to ensure that none of those international-standard guidelines is breached, the NHRC is being involved in the inspection process of labour camps to detect and punish violations. Qatar News Agency reported yesterday quoting Noemi Mohamed Al Hajri, a researcher at Qatar’s Foreign Ministry’s Human Rights Department, telling the UN Human Rights Council at its meeting in Geneva yesterday that the NHRC was being roped in to monitor the quality of labour camps in Qatar.
