Industrial Area will look better by 2018
Some 220km of roads in the Industrial Area will see a major overhaul, under a QR8bn development project being implemented by the Public Works Authority (Ashghal).
The project has been implemented in six phases. Phase one, which is currently in progress, is expected to be completed by the end of next year. This phase will see the renovation of Street 1 to Street 15 at an estimated cost of QR1.4bn approximately.
The entire project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2018. Once completed, it will serve 3,600 commercial and industrial facilities in the area and a population of about 257,000.
Under the project, all the roads in Industrial Area have been redesigned with intersections and traffic lights to increase capacity.
It also includes extension of sewage network and recycling of sewage water for watering parks and gardens. All garages and other facilities in the Industrial Area will get compound walls/fences with new designs.
There will be green areas on both sides of the roads. The project also includes bicycle lanes along the entire 220km stretch of roads.
All the roads will have CCTV cameras and radars to monitor traffic from different angles and ensure safety and security in this workers-dominated area.
“The Industrial Area will be more organised with implementation of this project. All the existing issues like haphazardly located facilities, abandoned cars, waste accumulation and water-logging will come to an end,” said Saud Ali Al Tamimi, Director of Road Projects and Infrastructure at Ashghal.
