WASHINGTON:US,  Nearly 22 million women — about one in five— have been raped in their lifetime in the US, with nearly half of the victims subjected to sexual assault before the age of 18, according to a report by the White House.

Though women of all the races have been targeted, however, women beolonging to some races are more vulnerable than the others, thr report added.

The report also said that about 33.5% of multiracial women have been raped, as have 27% of American-Indian and Alaska's native women, compared to the 15% of Hispanic, 22% of Black, and 19% of White women.

Most of the victims know their assailants and a vast majority (which is nearly 98%) of the perpetrators are male, according to the report released on Wednesday.

Nearly 22 million American women and 1.6 million men have been raped in their lifetime, it said.

The report titled "Rape and Sexual Assault: A Renewed Call to Action" outlined the facts surrounding rape and sexual assault and identified the key areas to focus on and improve including efforts towards changing social norms, improving criminal justice response etc. Times news today.

Yes, you are right Bajn. It is a crime in many in countries, but in some countries it isn't.

In the Maldives a few weeks back the President refused to allow a law that would make it illegal for a man to have sex with his wife without her consent, saying it was "not permissible under any circumstance for a woman to refrain from it when the husband is in need" due to their religion.

So when one country has statistics about rape that are different to another country, you have to keep in mind that rape means different things to different people.

Some people, like me, think that rape is having sex (or attempting to have sex) with someone who doesn't consent to sexual intercourse.

But other people think that it is okay under some circumstances for a man to have sex with a woman, even if she doesn't consent, and in their view this isn't rape -it's called marriage.

@ fubar. Marital rape is not outlawed in many countries.

fubar....you are right in respect of young girls. I was saying in general on the issue of rapes, anywhere, and may apply to girls of 17 years too since they, IMO, cannot be compared with girls of 9-10 years.

You might have a point in some of the cases HGL, but according to the report 12% of these women/girls suffered their first sexual assault when under the age of 10, and 30% were aged between 11 and 17.

Are we really to believe that the men who did this to these girls did so because of what they were wearing?

Who looks at a 9 year old girl and thinks "oh, she's wearing a short skirt, she must want it"?

The report titled "Rape and Sexual Assault: A Renewed Call to Action" outlined the facts surrounding rape and sexual assault and identified the key areas to focus on and improve including efforts towards changing social norms, improving criminal justice response etc. ....I would add that a bit of restraint on the part of women to let go of their clothes or an effort to be in clothes (clothes are meant to cover your body right...specially at two places for women and one for men, though designers these days and obviously on demand remove the cloth only from those two places to a large extent..:)) would also help reduce the numbers to some extent. This one made me think what I wrote:

Just notice that men are in as much clothes there as possible....:)

MM, Respect for women's dignity is to be upheld by each & every man. Social values are loosing it's ground very fast in some parts of our world which is a cause of worry.

Agree with Prize & MM , where they noted that folks abuse from their own circle of contacts who trusted them.

But what if you are married, and you have sex with your wife, even without her consent - she tells you clearly that she doesn't want sex with you but you penetrate her anyway.

is that a sin?

Mu` meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. (May Allah`s Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

What is zina major minor

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 17 Surah Israa verse 32:

Do not even go near ‘zina’ (fornication or adultery) for it is a very indecent thing and a very evil way!

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 24 Surah Noor verse 2:

2 The woman and the man guilty of ‘zina’ (fornication) flog each of them with a hundred stripes: let not compassion move you in their case in a matter prescribed by Allah if ye believe in Allah and the Last Day: and let a party of the believers witness their punishment.

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 8.810 Narrated by Jabir

A man from the tribe of Aslam came to the Prophet (saws) and confessed that he had committed ‘zina’ (adultery). The Prophet (saws) turned his face away from him till the man bore witness against himself four times. The Prophet (saws) said to him, "Are you mad?" He said "No." The Prophet (saws) asked, "Are you married?" He said, "Yes." Then the Prophet (saws) ordered that he be stoned to death, and he was stoned to death at the Musalla (public gathering place).

Although in legal terminology ‘zina’ would constitute the actual penetration of the male organ into the female organ out of wedlock, or illegal sexual intercourse…..the Messenger of Allah (saws) warned the believers regarding the minor ‘zina’ of the eyes, hands, legs, etc. Not only is the evil abomination of ‘zina’ prescribed as absolutely forbidden in Islam, every path or every way that leads one to this evil path is also declared as forbidden! Such is the gravity of this abomination of ‘zina’ (major or minor), that Allah Subhanah commands the believers in the Quran: ‘Do not even go near ‘zina’!!!

Sunan of Abu-Dawood Hadith 4886 Narrated by Anas ibn Malik

That he heard the Messenger of Allah (saws) say: ‘The eye commits ‘zina’, and the palm of the hand, the foot, the body, the tongue and private part of the body confirm it or deny it.’

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 8.260 Narrated by Ibn Abbas

I have not seen a thing resembling `lamam` (minor sins) than what Abu Huraira narrated from the Prophet (saws) who said "Allah has written for the children of Adan their share of ‘zina’ which he commits inevitably. The ‘zina’ of the eyes is the sight (to gaze at a forbidden thing), the ‘zina’ of the tongue is the talk, and the inner self wishes and desires and the private parts testify all this or deny it."

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 36 Surah Ya-Seen verse 65:

65 That Day shall We set a seal on their mouths. But their hands will speak to Us and their feet bear witness to all that they did.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 41 Surah Ha-Meem verses 19-23:

19 On the Day that the enemies of Allah will be gathered together to the Fire they will be marched in ranks.

20 At length when they reach the (Fire) their hearing, their sight, and their skins will bear witness against them as to (all) their deeds.

21 They will say to their skins: "Why bear ye witness against us?" They (their skins) will say: "Allah hath given us speech, (He) Who giveth speech to everything: He created you for the first time and unto Him were ye to return.

22 "Ye did not seek to hide yourselves lest your hearing, your sight, and your skins should bear witness against you! But ye did think that Allah knew not many of the things that ye used to do!

23 "But this thought of yours which ye did entertain concerning your Lord hath brought you to destruction, and (now) have ye become of those utterly lost!"

Thus if one intentionally sees and watches ‘fahisha’ (indecency), it would constitute ‘zina’ of the eyes; if one derives pleasure from talks of ‘fahisha’, it would constitute ‘zina’ of the ears and mouth, if one touches or goes towards something or someone with the intention of ‘fahisha’, it would constitute ‘zina’ of the hands and the legs! Although there is no prescribed punishment for the ‘zina’ of the eyes, mouth, ears, hands and feet in the life of this world, if one dies without seeking ‘taubah’ and repentance from their Lord, one will be held severely accountable for these acts of ‘minor’ zina in the Presence of their Majestic Lord in the Hereafter.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 7 Surah Aaraaf verse 33:

33 Say (O Prophet (saws)): ‘The things that my Lord hath indeed (absolutely) forbidden (declared ‘haraam’) are: ‘fahisha’ (shameful deeds) whether open or secret; sins and trespasses against truth or reason; assigning of partners to Allah for which He hath given no authority; and saying things about Allah of which ye have no knowledge.

Thus in conclusion, the abomination of ‘zina’ can be divided into two parts:

1. Major Zina….ie. illegal sexual intercourse, or the actual penetration of the male organ into the female organ out of wedlock….a crime for which Shariah Law has prescribed a punishment which a Shariah Court must extract in the life of this world from those who are convicted of the crime.

2. Minor Zina….ie. any act or deed of ‘fahisha’ or shamelessness or indecency. Although no particular punishment is prescribed for ‘minor’ zina in Shariah Law for the life of this world, those guilty of ‘minor’ zina will be held severely accountable for their practice of ‘fahisha’ in the Presence of the Lord Most Majestic on that Inevitable Day of Judgment.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

You need to understand the definition of ‘rape’ as it has been used in this study:

“In calculating the prevalence of rape, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) counts completed forced penetration, attempted forced penetration, or alcohol/drug facilitated completed penetration. Like other researchers, the CDC considers attempted forced penetration to fall within the definition of “rape” because that crime can be just as traumatizing for victims. As the CDC further explains, the most common form of rape victimization experienced by women was completed forced penetration: 12.3% of women in the United States were victims of completed forced penetration; 8% were victims of alcohol/drug‐facilitated completed penetration, and 5.2% were victims of attempted forced penetration. These are lifetime estimates and a victim might have experienced multiple forms of these subtypes of rape in her lifetime.”

Then you need to remind yourself that in other countries there are different definitions of what constitutes sexual assault. For instance there are many countries where a man can rape his wife, but this isn’t actually a criminal act, since the law doesn’t protect a wife’s decision to say “NO” to her husband – if he wants sex he gets it, regardless of what she thinks.
