Our Prophet said that those who don't thank the people have not thanked Allah. Whilst I will always remain most thankful to God first for all his blessings and mercy, I will also always remain grateful to all those who have helped me gain anything of success and precious possessions. In the case mentioned in the OP I am most likely to be equally grateful to both individuals.. The friend and the special someone.
