Designer Labels - Is it going too far ?

LV bags (fake or real) are seen everywhere in qatar. Designer labels are the order of the day, but is this going too far and "taking the pi$$?"

Designer £185 menswear brown paper bag sells out worldwide

Jil Sander's menswear autumn/winter 2012 'Vasari' bag is made of '100 per cent coated paper' and encompasses stitched seams.

The glorified paper bag hit the catwalk in the designer's menswear show back in January.

In an indication that people will buy anything with a designer label on it, the must-have accessory has now sold out, despite costing almost £200.

Furthermore, consumers desperate to get their hands on one of the bags can no longer purchase it from Jil Sander's official ecommerce site either. The designer was also forced to ask for stock back from external retailers.

I buy what catches my eye,i don't want a particular designer bag because everyone else has one. I'll buy it if i like it and if i can afford it..If i can't afford something i would rather save my pennies till i can. I would never buy fake, although can understand why people do.Agree with above statement..What ever floats your boat,if your happy who cares!

While I do find the get up mentioned in the OP and the cost of it ridiculously extravagant and a criminal waste of money, it must be said that each person may have their reasons as to why they pay big bucks for designer togs.

Personally I'd buy well known branded items for it's functionality, longevity, and good looks, and not cos it will make me feel/look superior to anyone else.

Many times an expensive product will also workout to be more economical in the long run, when it out lasts it's impostors and low cost alternatives. My dad was one who faithfully practiced this belief and it must be said that stuff he bought decades ago, are still in tip top condition.

Of course you'll have those who will buy the designer labels to look and feel better or to keep up with the trends, but if that's what makes them happy and helps em sleep better at night, whatever rocks their boat I say!

nomerci said Brit, I think the best way to find out is to ask those who actually can and will afford designer labels..."

True for you and all others who can afford and do buy and look really great and fashionable, plus the quality is superior and long-lasting.

But what about those who cannot afford them but still buy cos they feel the need to want to belong?

If I can't afford it,I won't buy a fake one just to make people think that I can afford. If I can afford it,I won't spend my money on that either.

Brit..and why not if that makes them happy...who are we to judge? ( I am not judging though;) )

I think it does.. There are many people out there who buy a designer label because it s the in thing at tat time.. LV being the perfect example now and Versace in the past..

Brit, I think the best way to find out is to ask those who actually can and will afford designer labels. To talk to those who can't / won't buy/afford them does not really make much sense now, does it?

I do have a few designer labels. For me it is neither wanting to belong nor is it individuality. I simply liked what I saw and bought it. As simple a that.

But well, that's just me.

So, is it a case of "wanting to belong" or individuality ?

yeh im hearing the nature of the job thing, but who for the yourselves or the person/s you will be meeting. I work with kids, young adults and adults with sports as a tool to engage. Ive worked with children who believe that if they wear football boots that cost £300 then they are actually better than the other kids. when quite often or not the kids with less expensive boots are better both in ability and mentality. One of my teen(both girls) is getting more and more into talking about designer labels. she also watches a lot of the programmes that enhance it ie 'only way is essex' (programme about young girls who dont work and all they are bothered about is cosmetic surgery and designer clothes) The other is not into them and couldnt care less. Guess which one has more drive, focus and does better at school. Dont think for one minute I'm saying that if you wear designer things your less intelligent no way im saying its upto the individual but i think that we need to teach or kids/adults there is a balance that needs to be struck. I for one no that there is'nt a human being that is better or above me because they wear designer clothes. phewww that was long

That's very smart, Palmer. Buy only what's needed.

But for some, the brands are necessary due to the nature of their jobs cos unfortunately, the world generally judges a book by its cover without looking any deeper. Sad but true and it's only the really wealthy who can afford not to care.

/Btw, "wealthy" not necessarily only in monetary terms.

When one can afford why buy the original? For the cost of 1 oriGinal you can buy at least 10 fakes.

Yes Brit, they have fake LV's. BUT, anybody with a little style and taste, won't.

And designer labels are not about individuality anymore. They are about showing off or simply about being able to afford them and thus buying them.

My point was that isn't it going too far. In the old days, one craved individuality and thus went for designer labels.

Now, if you go down to CC or Villagio of an evening, most women will be carrying the same make of handbag :O)

Pretty ridiculous...but clever of the designer. Especially selling it in the UK...where it rains more often that not...I'd come up with a "rain cover" for about 80 Pounds for the paper bag ;)
