Champion or cheat ?

I was saddened by the furore over Ye shiwen's swim. She won gold in the 400m individual medley after breaking her personal best by at least five seconds.

She swam the last 50m quicker than the men's champion, prompting leading US coach John Leonard to describe her performance as "disturbing".

There is no evidence against her and all medal winners are drug-tested.

Mr Leonard, executive director of the World Swimming Coaches Association, said her performance reminded him of the East German women swimmers in the 1980s who were doping on a systematic basis.

Isn't it just sour grapes ? All medalists are tested at the games - so is it right for Leaonard to make such accusations without proof ?

So if Asians win they're on drugs,c'mon people! let me tell you one thing in Asia, those who are not taking drugs are engaged in sports. Congratulations to her for winning, & if in case she really took drugs, well very good drugs then & to think it can't be tested? Do let me know what it is.0_o

Her overall time was 23 seconds slower than Lochte. Also, it has been shown that Lochte after leading was slowing down whereas Ye was coming from behind , thus speeding up.

Leonard's comment comes in the light of the fact that Chinese swimming waded through several drug scandals in the 1990s and as reports revealed, even this year, a 16-year-old swimming prodigy, Li Zhesi, failed a drug test.

it was not a time to be politically incorrect but one cannot ignore genetic doping and the fact that it is very difficult to detect.

"The cheats are always years ahead of the system. Aren't they?"

Ye's last 50 metres was faster than men's champion Ryan Lochte, and that has got people talking. "If you have been around swimming you know when something has been done that just isn't right," said John Leonard, executive director of the World Swimming Coaches' Association.

Who is Manny Pacquiao, did he challenge Rizks already? I bet he's afraid of our kalbo :-P

Mr. Leonard only reminds of me of his fellow American, Flloyd Mayweather Jr who refuses to fight with Manny Pacquiao because he fears for his health..he already admits to his fear of Pac Man when he brought up “performance enhancement drugs” and he further continues to admit to fear when he keeps talking about “self preservation”, and “health is more important”.. Floyd keeps saying Manny’s rise in weight is unheard of or not natural because of steroid use..but the truth is Floyd knows Pacquiao is a real threat to his health and undefeated record..BOOOO!!!

such lame excuses from flunkees..*yawn*

The americans are really poor sports persons. They cant stand others doing better then them. They only come up with this excuses like doping when the verdicts goes against them. Was it not the americans who were on dope all this years at the olympics when they always led the medals table. The americans are the ones who have been high on dope not only at the olmypics but at most everything else

Rooting for Ye Shiwen. John Leonard's unsupported innuendos are uncalled for. NO evidence whatsoever and he starts attacking a 16 year old's achievement. Hope he will publicly apologise unreservedly to her and give her due respect when the test results come out proving that she is clean.

You're right. Marion Jones broke my heart :o(

I would agree that doping does occur. It's just that the big players have the resources to develop drugs and masking agents which others can't.

Yeah, let them take dopes so we can enjoy unbelievable performance!

Currently a champion until proven otherwise. Just like Ben Johnson, champion one day, cheat the next.

The USA does not have a spotless record when it comes to doping so they cannot talk.

The US have done a good job of covering up the Lance Armstrong doping cases.

How is the ability to dope any different from the sports training advantages that one country has over another?

If, for instance, Germany can afford to spend $10,000,000 to train an athletics team, how is that morally any different to a Ugandan taking performance enhancing drugs? Both are availing of something that isn't available to all other competitors equally.

Let them dope, I say, and then the playing field will be leveled.

By anonymous• 31 Jul 2012 11:17

I think drugs are perfectly okay. How many people take drugs to merely survive? (Supplements, they call it, I guess).

The US are also world champions in doping. You can't win anymore if you don't dope. But what's the problem? It's a business and the people want to be entertained with performance. An athlet makes his money within 10 to 15 years. As in every business, only the best cheaters are sucessful. You must be very blue-eyed if you believe that there is any sport free of doping. And: not all substances are detectable. The dopers are always one step ahead. But again: it's what we want to see, isn't it? Would you watch Bolt if he ran only 10.0 seconds?

By fubar• 31 Jul 2012 11:04

Doping is rife at the Olympics. Even WADA will acknowledge massive amounts of undetected/undetectable doping.

But the IOC will want to keep it quiet so that they can carry on with their Citius, Altius, Fortius BS.
