hi, my husband has just been offered a job in Doha. so i need to start looking for schools, i have 3 children who will be going into years 9, 12 and 13 in sept. i have heard that getting school places is a huge problem in primary, is this the same in the higher year groups in secondary. it has to be the british school system. could someone please give me the names of some british schools that i could contact to try and get started. thank you.

Keep phoning your chosen schools and make sure you are at the top of the list. The schools are lazy - if a place crops up one day and you phone then you will get it

In that case , suggest you to stay put & don't move until you get a call from the school here. On the other hand, keep praying.

I did some research using internationalschoolsreview.com. There is a small fee - about $30 I think - and you can see reviews of loads of international schools. The reviews are most written by teachers so it gives you an insiders view. I think it was very good money spent because there are some very good schools in Doha and some bad ones.

MT--do you get a bonus for each expat you trick into attending a Newton school through QL?

to the OP--before looking at any Newton school do a QL search and read what others have posted.

Hi Sarahjb

I'm moving to Qatar this year and my son will be joining Qatar International School - I've looked at their GCSE and A level results and they're better than his current UK school. I didn't have any problem with the downloads - they are pdf files. To date the school has been pretty good with communications. Most of the teachers are British. If you want any more info, please PM me, I will be happy to chat.

They follow the British curriculum up to A level and usually have places. Could be considered to be expensive but the class sizes are small and all the teachers are qualified Brits. There are quite a few students from UK, the rest are international students. Somehow they have got a reputation for being a special needs centre but that isn't the case at all. My kids enjoyed being there and I was very happy with the education they received. There is some rumour going around that they are re-opening in bigger premises in September but I don't know if that's true. Worth giving them a call.

What about Qatar International School? They follow the British curriculum, teach GCSEs and A levels and I think they have places in years 12 and 13.

Yeah, it's a huge problem. People from the US and the UK are beginning not to come. Kids' education is important!

i looked up ACS, Compass and Sherbourne and none of them go up to years 12 or 13. only two schools in Doha that are the correct school system British and doing the correct years are Park House and Doha College. i will give park house a call and get there phone call and email clarified. next step will be looking at boarding schools for 3 boys - not something i want to do at all!!!

since initially they told you that there are places, have you tried to clarify the subject after receiving the email? I received the same email too but didn't persue as I got offer from another school. I was told they receive around 100-200 apps a day. Did u apply other schools as well ? Any luck ? U can try ACS, compass & sherbourne. Compass & sherbourne are more expensive & may just have a seat for your kids.

Have you tried Newton Lagoon?? Its a brand new school just opened this year and it should have spaces. Its an extension to the 3 previous Newton schools.

very disappointed today, spoke to one school and they said yes they would have spaces for my two eldest boys and then 2 days later had an email saying they are full with a huge waiting list.

Hi Sara,

We are in the same boat, in essence it seems that the only secondary schools worth looking into would be Doha College, Park House and Doha Academy. Dont bother with Sherborne they will not look at kids older than 15.
