any American registered nurses?

Are there any US nurses that follow this forum, please?
I am considering Qatar- Doha for the main reason that I have lived 'on the water' most of my life- I feel most comfortable being by a large body of water!
I have been a registered nurse since the mid 1980's- High Risk Labor/Delivery, Open Heart Recovery, ICU, Emergency Room. I have worked in very remote Indian reservations in the US for Federal Gov't.
I may be wrong- and feel free to comment if I am not correct...what started me looking at nursing positions is when SO was potentially offered a job in Qatar- he is with airlines in US currently.
Looking into jobs for myself, to me it seemed that I would like Doha- the water for one... Also, from what I could find from other nurses, safety-wise, Doha is what has been recommended. I am aware of the need to live by myself, needing an 'escort' if out with SO, the dress code, etc. It does scare me a bit about not being able to walk about town due to aggressive nationals.
Do I really need a driver? If I cannot walk safely, I would rather drive myself- or maybe after I get used to the driving/traffic, THEN have my own car. If driving is that bad there, maybe I need a driver so I don't get into an accident??
I am quite independent, so I would do alot of sightseeing on my own.
I have not applied to any nursing positions at this time. I have a friend who lived/taught in Iraq for several years. She thinks I might do best to work privately for a family.?.
Whatever any nurses from US can tell me would be very much appreciated- the more I can learn, the easier the decision to come or not...
Thank you.

thanks
western nurses don't care lol of course not that's why the quality of training of western nurses is way above other countries!! ignorant juvenile comment.....
also in the experience..
correct me if I'm wrong. I think the salaries are based from which country the person came from because we have different exchange rate depending on the country.
Jobs in Qatar are reserved to certain nationalities based on the job.
Nurses/secretary: Pinoys
Labor: Nepali/Indian/etc
IT/agents/sales/support:Indian/arab/pinoy
Management: Arab (mostly Lebanese)
Upper management: USA/UK and sometimes Arab
Owners: Qatari
Every nationality has its price tag. It is unlikely that they hire you for a job that a pinoy can do for 1 tenth the salary that you would get. Yes you could be more qualified but hey its Qatar :)
Do yourself a favour and go to some other place with water heheh Trust me, this place required major stamina because not only most people are too slow, they actually think that they work hard when they do nothing but talk.
The Filipino nurses here are very dedicated, skilled and caring. I adore each and every one of them that I know. That doesn't make Western nurses any less so.
Mandi
it's a counter comment to those who tries to belittle the Filipino nurses here working dedicatedly!
Wow, now there's a sweeping generalization! No wonder health care is so bad in the US, the nurses just let all of 'em die.
Mandi
or does the color counts?
Western nurses even if hired will not last in HMC. Because they "DON'T CARE" which is the basic of NURSING!
Western nurses will not work for HMC pay.....
Actually they prefer filiipino nurses because they will work for low salaries unlike Western trained nurses....FACT!!! And NO their training is not on par with US/ UK standards.....far from it .. So get over it......
The pay scale for american nurses here are diferent, and it all depends on how many years you have been working as a nurse. Try to apply in Hamad Hospital, they regard western nurses so highly.
are NOT at par with hospital in Qatar in terms of technical exposure? Unless you have live in Manila and experience such, please don't be judgmental about Filipino nurses! Why do you think they prefer Filipinos as nurses here, because of education only? Excuse me! Do not generalize.
And, sweety, could you be a teensy-weensy little bit less touchy?
Mandi
Not belittling at all, Flor, we need good nurses in the US, we have a drastic shortage. The nursing schools in the Philippines are good but the hospitals do not have the technical advantages that Qatar does. So Philippine nurses get a good education in their home country and good training in Qatar and then are able - if they choose - to go on to work in the West. Since RNs in the US make $40-60,000 USD a year, I think many of them find the opportunity attractive. Wouldn't you?
Mandi
how many per cent of nurses are you referring making Qatar the stepping stone to the West? And do you think it's wrong?
"Most nurses in Qatar are from the Philippines. They are here after their education to gain the technical experience needed to go to the West. Hence their time here is kind of an internship and they are paid VERY little. I mean VERY!"
Can you elaborate the above quoted comment of yours?
Y'know what, I forgot Aspetar. Good place, reasonable salaries.

Hello There,
I know few Amecian Nurses working here. Let me check with them & get back to you.
Cheers
All are low by Western standards. Nursing is particularly low. The actual pay I quoted was not for hospital nursing.
Mandi
omg Mandilulur is that the pay for all Hospital positions (ie. Doctors, Research techs, and Medical techs) or just nurses?
Err, more modern, cosmopolitan and tolerant than the US? May I invite you to visit America, sir?
Mandi
Doha might be more modern, cosmopolitan and tolerant to expats than most of the cities in US... you've just confused it with Saudi.
No, no no! You've confused Qatar with Saudi. No escorts needed, no aggressive locals, no head covering. You are correct, you cannot live with someone to whom you are not married. That would mean if you wanted to live here you must get a job that could sponsor you. But that would also mean you could be banned for 2 years if you wanted to change jobs, you would need an exit permit each time you leave the country, etc. Now, nursing jobs. Most nurses in Qatar are from the Philippines. They are here after their education to gain the technical experience needed to go to the West. Hence their time here is kind of an internship and they are paid VERY little. I mean VERY! Private duty pays even less, around $400 month. Friend of mine from Buffalo with an RN and a MSN was offered $2.12 hour. The exception might be Calgary University which has a nursing program. They might hire you as faculty? Best I can say is do some more homework about Qatar and think about getting married.
