Is this salary reasonable?

Hi,

Please could you advise me on this package which I have been offered:

- Salary: ~60,000 QR/month
- Includes "suitable accommodation" (that's exactly what it says!)
- Includes school fees upto 20,000 QR per child (upto 3 kids, and I have 3 kids).
- 50 days annual leave
- Business class tickets for family at start, end and annual leave.

I would be quitting a "job for life" in the UK which pays net £4,500 after tax.

Do you think it's worth it?

Excellent salary package! Just a little low on school fees, but everything else seems perfectly fine :) Take it ... dont think too much about it! You'll save far more here in Doha than you can ever do in UK!!!!

Hi, I got an offer of QAT3500 plus tips for a bartender vacancy in Doha. They offer accommodation, transport and meals when I'm on duty. Is that enough to live in Doha?

Thanks all for the useful comments & advice.

@contrails - Yes, I will have to top-up the school fees, but will still be saving more in Doha despite that.

@LincolnPirate - I think it will be a 4-year contract. I should be able to fairly easily get work back home when I return.

@simeen_maajid' - Hospital doctor.

@Mandilulur - £4.5k/month take-home in UK -> ~£10k tax-free in Doha. What I'm spending now on rent is the same as what I would spend on school fees.

Is my math wrong? You would be making about 20% more figuring an after-tax base? AND you would lose that 20% with the kids' schooling. Hmm. My feet would be cold!

If it's a job for life, then you can always go back to it.

Try to find out how long they will have you. You give up a "job for life" in the UK for a limited opportunity. Or do they give you a contract until you retire?

You may like to spend a decade or more here.

Two things...

1. the school allowance is meager and you'll be spending another 20k-25k per child per year on school fees (assuming you are British and want to keep your kids within the UK curriculum?)

2. "suitable housing" is very vague. Not sure who your employer is, but I would recommend getting this defined better. You don't want to end up in a shoe box size apartment with 3 kids.

It is a hospital consultant job.

Looking at the maths it's a no-brainer. But when it actually comes to resigning, leaving parents behind, uprooting the kids, the uncertainty of getting a school place for 3 kids in Doha (age 9, 7, 6), adapting to the ex-pat lifestyle and mind-set, and so on... I guess I'm just getting cold feet. Is that normal?! LOL

presumably this is a joke? You are giving up a job in the UK which pays less than half what this job pays and you also get living expenses and school fees. 50 days annual leave too so only 6 weeks!

What are you going to be doing for a job here?

No, don't worry, woodhouse. Some of us on QL are a little English-challenged, that's all.

Are you saying noone in Qatar can get a salary more than 40,000QR?

Thanks, good advice.

(Yes, the includes means in addition to the salary).

A little low on the school fees but otherwise OK. You might want to find out what others in your position are being given in terms of suitable accommodation! And do understand that nothing is for life here in the Gulf.
