Moving from UK, want to bring my 'blade!

Hey guys

I currently live and work in the UK but I'm moving to Qatar for a year+ in a few weeks and I want to know if its OK to bring my Fireblade (2010). I've been told by one friend that the sand is actually very dangerous for "fast" bikes as you can lean it over into a corner and suddenly find grains of sand breaking the contact between your rubber and the road, causing you to slide odwn the road, is this true?

Aside from the 4x4 drivers and the temperature, is the sand the only real danger or is it not as bad as i've been told?

Is it also worth bringing my bike i.e. is there anywhere to ride road bikes (other than Losail, i'm not going to do that every weekend!) and people to ride with?

Thanks!!!

Stuart

Max, its very possible i may do that but bikes are actually the same price there as in the UK.... at least all the ones I see on the web :)

Thats a lot of Harley's! Or you could be talking about the average age of the riders hehe

Dweller; because i'm an idiot and linked the wrong bike, that was my "old" one ... do'h!

Marais; thank you for the link! I'll go sign up, sound promising, thank you!

BritExPat; thanks, hope so too :)

kiwiinqatar123: Don't get it, I see nothing wrong.....? Unless your telling THATS heavy traffic?? You ain't seen nothing pal, try riding in London!! Obviously not as dangerous but far more congested.

thwho186: No.

Thanks guys for all the replies!!! :)

I have been speaking to a mate who lives, er well, in various countries and he has told me that buying one in Dubai, brand new, would be as cheap as shipping because of the low taxes. I've also considered the sand a bit more and maybe a bike with traction control, like the BMW sports might be a wise idea..... couple of things to investigate I guess :)

Again, thanks all!!

I wouldn't think it was worth the cost and effort.

My son in law has a 2011 FB and has lived in Qatar. There is no way he would take his bike out there even if he moved on a permanent basis. Is that the bike and if so why has it got an early 2007 plate and not a 2010?

You can bring your Blade. Every Friday there is a bunch of guys riding, and if they arent riding on a Friday, they are on Losail.

Summers do get hot to ride, but its still rideable. Sand is always a concern, but not a big issue. Mostly in rounabouts is where you got to be careful of sand. Thats normal, same as what you watch out for oil and other debris.

The guys here have there own social group, with bike nights, chat group and recently added a website as well "qatarkneedraggers.com"

If you are into offroad there is always the Friday morning dessert run with offroad bikes.

Enjoy

Here's some other poor soul who decided to bring his bike to Qatar and feel the desert breeze swishing through his locks.

The biggest problem you will have to contend with is that ferocious, unpredictable beast, lovingly known as "The Landcruiser".

3 months seriously hot = 9 months of riding weather ;)

I've looked into the climate and I'm aware of it. ☺

No need to bring the bike because of hot climate. You will not enjoy ur ride plus sand is also one point.

Crazy: because I would only be happy with the power a new bike gives and I suspect I would loose thousands of pounds in depreciation?

Brit: done additional training with IAM and the police and have 14 years on road race bikes but nothing that deals with sand! :)

Bring the bike. Yes,the sand can be dangerous, but if you are a qualified rider than you should be able to handle it ..
