Looks or Substance

Miss Mimi
By Miss Mimi

A nationwide study has found that heavier set African American women are actually happier with their bodies than most average-sized or thin Caucasian women.
The survey by the Washington Post and the Kaiser Family Foundation interviewed 800 women across the country to discover 66% of overweight or obese black women had high self-esteem, while only 41% of skinny white women could say the same!
Although they love their curves, 90% African American women revealed in the survey that they thought living a healthy lifestyle is more important that religion, career and marriage. 28% were also more likely to insist that being physically attractive is "very important", while only 11% of white women could say the same.
The average Caucasian participant was more likely to agree that being physically attractive is only "somewhat important."

So is being healthy more important than religion, career or marriage? Is it more important to be thin and/or attractive than to have a rewarding career and a happy marriage?

Would you rather be big & happy or skinny & miserable?

MM, try to limit calories from fat. 1200 calories received from relatively small McDonald's BigMac and 1200 calories received from huge Ceasar salad are not the same. BigMac's fat goes directly to your hips, belly and waist, and stays there forever, dammit!.. while salad gives you energy and lot of vitamins.

nah, MM.. with 1500-1600 calories a day you can get all necessary matters, for sure!

and about Oprah. I know how desperately she wanted to loose weight.. what just she didn't do.. I don't think her weight made her happy.. rather not..

By Miss Mimi• 6 Mar 2012 14:16
Miss Mimi

The ideal calorie intake per day is 1750 to 2000 for a healthy woman QS. When I eat only 1500 calories a day I'm seriously hungry and cranky all day.

Khanan, yes. As long as it is what matters to her.;)

Looking at women 50 years ago..well, by the standards that are applied now, they are chubby...look ay Marylin Monroe..she was a sex idol then..today she would have to loose at least 10 kg.

Now,as we can see, times change, and standards with it. 100 years ago, women who were classed as beautiful would be seriously fat (look at paintings by the Old Masters) by today's standards.

I think balance is the key word here. Also, every person has her /his ideal weight, naturally...the weight one has and keeps if and when one lives a healthy lifestyle.

MM, you might be not too slim, but definitely not obese, or even significantly overweight.. and as you said, this is temporary and understandable, for the obvious reason.. and I do know that you care about the way you look, like any other sane person... So you are all right :)

And nothing wrong with eating 1500 calories a day, limiting yourself a little bit. It's for your own benefits. You don't want to get into eating disorder and uncontrollable eating, right?

We all have to limit ourselves this way or another. Maintaining basic discipline in a right and healthy way doesn't have to make us unhappy.

Yep! Just look at Oprah or Queen Latifah. The media has played a major part in this. Up to the last century, Caucasian women were very comfortable with their bodies. The rot started as Hollywood and commercialization came to the fore.

Sadly, the same is now occurring in other societies.

Well I'm not thin, slim or toned, especially not at the moment. And in order to be so I need to work out for at least 2 hours a day and eat only around 1200 to 1500 calories a day. Which would mean that I'm miserable. So I guess for me, I'd rather be a little overweight and happy, than skinny and miserable.

By Missteacher• 6 Mar 2012 12:47

Exactly! @Qatarisun

Missteacher, exactly my feelings. I cannot feel happy if I look bad. Of course, to look good or bad is subjective term. For me to look good is to be fit in the first place. So I definitely don't feel happy when i gain weight. It also brings me to the idea, again, that look is very important, especially for women. It is known that good looking people succeed much more often and in larger scale than those who doesn't care about their look. And I am not talking about natural beauty of the person. Even not too pretty woman can look great if she looks after herself, by taking care of her body shape, skin, hair, etc. And such woman even will look much better than the one with gorgeous natural feature, but obese and ungroomed.

odd comparison: "66% of overweight or obese black women had high self-esteem, while only 41% of skinny white women could say the same!"

And what about skinny black women and overweight white women? Maybe among skinny black women the percentage of self-esteemed women is much higher than 66%? And among overweight white women the percentage of self-esteemed women is much lower than 41%?

In this case it would give us different study result. It would show us that black women are happier in general, than the white ones, regardless to their weight..

I also doubt that "28% were also more likely to insist that being physically attractive is "very important", while only 11% of white women could say the same."

I am pretty much sure that 100% of ALL women think that being physically attractive is "very important", or even essential.

I don't really believe in such studies. They pull out the details out of the whole context, comparing the incomparable, and come to weird conclusions ..

I personally chose to be skinny and happy. Skinny for my health and look, and happy for my spirit, and by the way, for my health and look as well..

One thing I've learned so far that one thing which is precious these days is 'good health'...Most of the people (including my family) are not healthy each one is suffering with life threatning diseases (heart problems, asthma etc.)...So,to be healthy is most important either u r overweight or underweight...And when one is healthy he/she is happy...Personally I prefer thin...
