"WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The number two leader of al Qaeda, Atiyah abd al-Rahman, was killed on August 22 in Pakistan, a senior U.S. official told Reuters on Saturday.
The official did not say how Rahman was killed, but said it happened in Waziristan, northwest Pakistan.
The death, coming soon after the May killing of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, was a huge blow to the extremist organisation, the U.S. official said.
"Atiyah's death is a tremendous loss for al Qaeda, because (Ayman al-Zawahri) was relying heavily on him to help guide and run the organisation, especially since Bin Laden's death," the official said. Zawahri replaced bin Laden as the leader of al Qaeda after bin Laden was killed, also in Pakistan.
"The trove of materials from Bin Laden's compound showed clearly that Atiyah was deeply involved in directing al Qaeda's operations even before the raid. He had multiple responsibilities in the organisation and will be very difficult to replace," the U.S. official said.
U.S. Defence Secretary Leon Panetta said last month on a visit to Afghanistan that he believed the strategic defeat of al Qaeda was within reach if the United States could kill or capture up to 20 remaining leaders of the core group and its affiliates.
"We're within reach of strategically defeating al Qaeda and I'm hoping to be able to focus on that, working obviously with my prior agency as well," said Panetta, who ran the CIA until the end of June."

American Media is a bloody liars... and so is Obama Administration... I do not believe on all this crap.. !
whom everyone beleives.was reading the same news on BBC, and found interesting the highlighted information about him.Believed to be in his late 30s, Abd al-Rahman was a close confidant of Osama Bin Laden, who was killed by US special forces in a raid in northern Pakistan in May.Abd al-Rahman joined Bin Laden in Afghanistan as a teenager in the 1980s. He later gained a reputation within al-Qaeda as an explosives expert and Islamic scholar.http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-south-asia-14695569
So w2j, are you saying the Americans are lying and Al-Rahman hasn't been killed? If so, perhaps you should take it up with Reuters?

Er...why?
redtreblewhen U started reading news and watching electronic media???
Given that the US is fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan, I don't see why they would pull out after killing Al Qaeda Leaders in Pakistan.
does it mean, that now NATO and US will pullout their forces from Afghanistan after vanishing their top leadership???
And what has left brain vs right brain got to do with Qatar? Didn't comment about that did you? Or on any of the other many posts that have nothing to do with Qatar for that matter.
The official did not say how Rahman was killed, but said it happened in Waziristan, northwest Pakistan.
Same situation with Osama they say they drowned him - do they feel shy to show the dead bodies ??

qatarliving to do with this or were the Al Qaeda members from Qatar
