Please explain what is a villa?
I am trying to browse the classified, my husband is on holiday but has asked me to look on QL to see if there is any housing that we may be interested in, but I have one nagging question: it is driving me mad!! What exactly is a "villa", certainly there is no US or European equivilent?? We are not arriving until next month so I cant post a "wanted" from here. I looked on google but hard to find a straight answer- detached, semi-detached, multi-tenant... what??? So sorry if this is an unintelligent question!
As mentioned, a villa is a house and "usually" (because I'm not sure) located in a compound (composed of many villas and a recreational place like playground for kids, tennis court and swimming pool)...:)
a HOUSE! Clear now? It took you this long to realize this?
Your question was not stupid, but many of the answers were. A villa is a house, normally detached, but could be semi. In Qatar for expats there are 4 main options. (1). A villa on a compound; which is a walled and gated group of villas, anywhere from 15 to 300 villas. The larger the compound, the better the facilities, there could be a Club House, shared pool, Gym, restauant, shop, tennis courts, squash courts, pool room etc. They are good for people with children because you can let the kids go where they want, knowing it is secure. (2) West Bay Lagoon. This is a series of Streets surrounding a man-made lagoon, The villas are in groups, you might live next door to your landlord, if you like water activities then it is a good choice but more expensive. The whole lagoon is fenced and gated, but not as secure as a compound. (3). Stand-Alone villa. A freestanding villa with a wall and its own gate, not so good for meeting people. (4) an Appartment in a high rise, for instance in The Pearl. These also have shared facilities like pool, gym, etc. Look on wikimapia.com and enter "Al Fardan Gardens II Compound" in the search. You will see a good example of a Compound, next door is Al Fardan Gardens 5. Then enter "Tower 31 Qatar" for The Pearl and "West Bay Lagoon Qatar" Good luck.
a compound consists of villas (and sometimes apt blocks) again, the villas can be detached, semi detached etc. Usually there are extra facilities like a community pool, playground, perhaps a gym, small store (for milk eggs etc), sometimes a laundry. There is usually only one principal gate, with security of varying degrees of capability.
A lot of the accomodation here is fully furnished or semi furnished (the first being all furniture and major appliances and the second hit or miss depending on the landlord)
A villa is a house basically.
and by the way does anyone have any idea what they call those places at the industrial area where they have between ten to fifteen people stuck in a room. Are this called larger villas or furnished and over loaded apartments
ok and is a compound like what, a gated community? a subdivision?
well, again, sorry if the question was "STUPID" although I feel it was legitimate, if you read the responses they are varied, so to me it seems like the word "Villa" is not so cut and dry, and no, we do not have such "Villas" in the US... there are homes, duplexes, townhomes, and flats or apartments, this is all that I have knowledge of. But anyway, I appreciate the responses, very helpful.
DON'T you have any VILLA in USA?
Villa is an independent house, where no body is living on top or below you. Sizes and facilities anyway varies.
Smal bunglow with tiny bedrooms big hall a lawn car parking and shared swiming pool or own pool too.Depends on the location and money....
villa is the word used here for house, they can be detached, semi detached, town houses or in compounds
can also be detached or semi-detached.
