Supplies tend to be sporadic, so if you find a decent supply be sure to stock up (like everything else). To be honest since they are gifts I choose more for the packaging than the quality of date.

Britexpat--Most of the dates are, but you can buy local ones in decorative boxes at most groceries. I get them all the time as gifts for friend, and them seem to go down very well. Just make sure they are packaged for the sake of customs.

well, you can also buy swards or daggers which are freely availble in any gift shops, the good ones are pretty expensive though but worth a lot. There is a souvenir shop on the Salwa road near Sami restaurant you will fing a very good collection there.

Hope this helps

On a serious note try

A dullah (traditional coffee pot with a set of small kahwa cups (for Arabic coffee)...you can buy Arabic coffee in the souq but I like the coffee from the shop Al Ameed opposite Macdonalds on C ring road after Ramada (this is usually brewed slowly with added cloves, saffron, cardamon but quick and easy way to make the coffee is use about one tblsp. with one regular size mug of boling water

Buy dates--they're one of the few things actually made in Qatar.
