Apple's Chinese workers treated inhumanely
An investigation into the conditions of Chinese workers has revealed the shocking human cost of producing the must-have Apple iPhones and iPads that are now ubiquitous in the west.

When the allegations were put to Foxconn by the Observer, manager Louis Woo confirmed that workers sometimes worked more than the statutory overtime limit to meet demand from western consumers, but claimed that all the extra hours were voluntary. Workers claim that, if they turn down excessive demands for overtime, they will be forced to rely on their basic wage: workers in Chengdu are paid only 1,350 yuan (£125) a month for a basic 48-hour week, equivalent to about 65p an hour.

At least the teaboys get paid better here
It is an economical rule "law of supply and demand". You can not even blame capitalism for this. I mean if the Chinese workers wouldn't like to work in factories and continue to be villagers they could survive as their ancestors had lived for centuries. This is their demand to have a better life of standart to earn more money etc. Their supply is our demand and even they were not doing this some other countries would be doing like Vietnam, India, Indonesia, Turkey etc... I am not happy to be away from home, working almost 72 hours a week, etc but my demand is to gain enough money to have a better life in the future. Unless they are slaves this is their choice to work in those factories. And if there is a choise there is always opportunity cost.
Capitalism - exploit the have-nots so that the haves enjoy
The reason why China's economy is growing is because it pays less than everyone else. The day they pay a decent wage is the day all the factories move to another country. THIS is root of Chinese GDP growth that everyone gets sooo excited about. And every time each of us buys anything from China we are participating in the system.
Yea capitalism!
well, isnt that same thing followed here as well? If the worker for a requisite post is not available in abundance, wouldnt companies here be willing to pay more?
Tinker...so as per your opinion the increase in demand is the reason for the plight of the said workers. Would like to know your thoughts as to how do you propose to see lesser consumers for a particular product or a decrease in demand.
mr WK we are talking about APPLE bcoze this post if for APPLE
Thats TOO MUCH... I mean the wages are too much.
Its like QR 1750/-? Thats too much.
*Ignorant Mode ON*
QL_King that was a real expert comment by you.
Bravo!!!
That is what I am wondering, why are you talking about Apple when every company does the same.
WK everything is made and assembled in china but here we're talking about APPLE INC.
An eApple a day keeps the Doctors away ! :(
@tinkerbell10 apple generates billions of dollars from us and increasing its profit so its apple's human resource department's job to deal wit these issues.
What about Nike, Levi, Louis Vitton and countless others ?
Asif where is your computer made?
The one you are using to make all these comments.
MORALE OF THE STORY: stop buying apple products.
Sadly, this discussion has been going on for years - especially since "Body shop" got shopped :o)
Most consumers don't care where or how the product is made. They just want a "good deal".
I am a bit intrigued how are consumers to be held responsible for the impropriety conducted by a business house.
i wonder why APPLE inc. doesnt pay fair wages to its employees???
mr. steve jobs must look into this issues seriously and pay the workers fairly as IPONE and IPODS are most sucessful products in the market and generating enough revenue world wide.
Well I do feel sorry for these poor Workers, what choice do we have. If the Ipad was truely manufactuered in the US do you think it would be sold for the same retail price?
I liked this statement from Apple:
"Apple is committed to ensuring the highest standards of social responsibility throughout our supply base. Apple requires suppliers to commit to our comprehensive supplier code of conduct as a condition of their contracts with us. We drive compliance with the code through a rigorous monitoring programme, including factory audits, corrective action plans and verification measures."
Looks like the statement made by Apple is just good to read.
You say it, Mr. WK.
Anyone using any Made in China product should not be blaming Apple or Mr. Jobs or any of the other companies with manufacturing facility in China.
We the consumers are causing this, we are making those workers suffer.
The same thing occurs in many developing nations where the government turns a blind eye in order to ensure foreign investment and employment for its people.
The focus should be on "outing" the companies involved and prosecuting them ...... But then , they also generate revenue for the local economy :O(
And still mr.steve jobs stands proudly in front of massive brainwashed crowd and introduces his products.
Same here in the Industrial Area!
In China they have dormitories with small bunk beds which goes upto 7-8 beds piled upon..They have no human values.
The working conditions are almost the same in every factory in China. What is so special about this case?
very bad
even the guy washing car here in the malls earns alot more than that
