Experienced Corporate Lawyer
My husband, two children and I are hoping to move to Doha from the U.K.in August. I have secured a teaching post but my husband is still actively looking for a position, ideally in the Legal Profession. He has been a partner in a Corporate Legal Practice in the UK for approx. 20 years, is a highly intelligent, personnable and hard working man, but due to the length and type of his experience (some in sports related matters (FA football transfers etc.), it seems to be working against us. He will consider any decent professional role, even outside the legal profession. This is not about earning a huge salary but starting a new (nice quality) life and having new challenges. If anyone has any pointers, we would greatly appreciate some help. Thank-you in anticipation!
What will be his sponsorhip status ? Presumably he will be under your sponsorship and this will have to change when he gets a job ?
This can put off potential employers
Many thanks for your response. It is, quite honestly, as we have suspected. Of course, with regards to my husband's 'take' on all of this there is an element of 'this is what I do' and hence inevitably there will be a coming to terms with not looking at the legal profession. But the question is, where does he look? As I have said, he is a highly intelligent man, extremely personable and hard working (and I now it would help if he earned more than me - probably not hard, as I'm a teacher!! :-)
There are limited opportunities for expat lawyers here. Qatar law is, of course unique, and not as legally constricted in the corporate world as in the EU or US. Most firms in need of corporate legal advice when dealing with other countries simply hire a firm from the outside. I consult with a number of groups dealing with substantial investments in UK property and companies, and I don't think I have ever dealt with an in-house solicitor here.
If he is willing to try something new, my advice is for him to think about what else interests him and pursue that path.
