France's burqa ban starts tomorrow

frenchieman
By frenchieman

From the Times newspaper:

French police will from tomorrow be empowered to intercept Muslim women wearing full-face veils and to threaten them with fines if they refuse to expose their faces.

Meanwhile, the Netherlands may soon pass a law banning Jewish and Muslim traditions on the ritual slaughter of animals.

While some other countries have drawn up bans on the burqa and the niqab, France - home to Europe's largest Muslim population - will be the first to risk stirring social tensions by putting one into practice.

A woman who repeatedly appears veiled in public can be fined R1500 and ordered to attend re-education classes.

There are much more severe penalties - including a R300000 fine - for anyone found guilty of forcing anyone to hide their face, in a measure clearly aimed at fathers, husbands or religious leaders who force women to wear face veils.

Qhris said "The French argument is that the covering stops identification, and threatens security.

Sadly, some extremist MEN will wear the Burqa, to try to evade security and commit terrorist acts, so the French say. They feel justified by protecting the majority, not the minority."

Which is unfortunately justified. It's the actions of a minority extremists that brought about this restriction and it is up to the moderates to band together and weed out those extremists. And it's not just in one religion.

Instead of criticisng the new rule, we should look at the bigger picture and acknowledge the root cause and deal with the problem at its roots.

Same thing for rules in Qatar as well. It used to be more liberal and accomodating but it was misused by a number of earlier expats and now, the rest have to suffer greater restrictions - why? The govt has to tighten its rules and enforcement to protect its people - rightly so.

Having said that, of course, the enforcement bit is still a fair bit off but at least they are doing something about improving things. And change for progress is painful and not without mistakes.

I really don't see what the outrage is. First of all many Muslim countries ban the veil in government and semi-government buildings, including the UAE. Secondly, there are only 600 women in France who wear the veil in the first place. Thirdly the veil is not required by Islam. I'm all for freedom of expression but the French have always been about protecting and imposing French culture, and they always will be. If the women insist on wearing the veil, move next door to Germany.

I am really happy that Khalifa had it handed to him by a smart, intelligent and thoughtful Muslim.

There is really no way for him to escape out of this one, because when smart, intelligent non-muslims have made valid points, he falls back on the tired old 'Kafir' insult without actually having a constructive argument.

This will be interesting, he can't squirm out of it and call What Do You Want an impure human being, he is actually going to have to speak sense.

What Do You Want, thanks for speaking out and p.s. it is sad that there is so much misunderstanding that makes you frustrated.

I think their attacks on this thread are fueled by anti-West sentiments more than any desire for free religious expression. And their remarks only fit the false stereotype that plays into the politicians in Europe calling for such bans.

I'm a Muslim.. and I'm not a niqabi.. I am a woman wearing a hijab.. I love my religion.. and defend it dearly.. I hate it when people bash my religion.. I hate it when people misunderstand my religion.. I get frustrated.. and answer logically(check my previous answers on previous posts)..

you on the other hand Khalifakhanji, suprise me with your reactions! first stop being uptight.. second.. stop bashing and bad mouthing people.. u say astagfirullah on a video (that is filmed by french girls protesting the new law in their own way(they are not Muslims)) then u start using the F words bashing other people! that's contradiction! no need to talk(type) this way.. plus.. I didn't see anyone bashing but u! Frenchieman was reporting a story.. he didn't even insert his opinion in there.. so what's ur problem!?? please answer nicely and logically to give good impression about Muslims.. otherwise u failed!

fyi.. in Syria.. the majorly muslim arab country, they have banned the face veil for a long time, now.. as a matter of fact girls are not allowed to wear headscarfs in schools! they changed it just recently.. niqabis were banned from studying in college and working afterwards..

in Tunisia.. another Muslim country.. the hijab(the headscarf) is banned in general.. a girl with a hijab canNOT do anything.. even their IDs should be without hijab!

in Turkey a 90% muslims.. turkish girls are not allowed to wear a hijab in school or colleges or any government job!

I'm not defending france.. I'm just saying that why don't we Muslims start changing the rules in our own counries before we criticize and bash a European country... just wondering!

In many countries he along with a couple of other users here can be sent to prison actually for repeated threats that they keep issuing, I wonder whether there is any provision in Qatar for such things.

Anyway for the topic in hand, well there should be freedom of choice in an ideal world and veils should have been banned only in places where security is an issue.

The facebook page will disappear soon too. Many are western bashing and inciting to violence, which mean facebook will ban it, them, and hand over their personal info to the US government and its allies. And facebook keeps logs of IP address log-ins for up to two years and as a matter of course they regularly share this info with the US gov. Personally I oppose such infringements, but there you go.

We're liberal according to our own definition. No woman should be told what to wear, and wearing disguises, masks, veils in public hide one's identity runs contrary to French culture. Fine for people to disagree and speak out against it. If enough people agree, then the law can be changed. In France this is everyone's right. I have no problem with women who where veils in this country, as this is the cultural norm. Women may not go topless at the beaches, but it is not the culture norm. And I am ok with that here too.

Yes I saw the anti-QL page on facebook. Very strange that all these angry people troll through QL to find posts they don't like so that they can complain about them. I think the disorder is called obsessive-compulsive?

What is anti-QL?

And you would not be the first to complain about the freedom of speech on QL. Do you seriously not think that the government monitors the posts on this site in order to measure public sentiment and opinion? They're entirely aware of what transpires here, and for whatever reason they find that it is useful for it to continue. Blocking it (or at least strangling its traffic) wouldn't be that hard.

If you pay attention to the threads, you will find that an awful lot of Muslims disagree with you. Get over yourself.

I think, Islam has a dress code but it does not require a woman to cover her face.

The generic requirements for women are...

1-The dress should cover the entire body up to the wrist and ankle including neck but excluding the FACE.

2-Head must be covered completely, no part of the hair should be visible.

3-The dress must be loose and must not be figure hugging.

4-The material must not be so thin that one can see through it.

Anything else is exaggeration.

To someone who said: it is their country... well - majority of them would be immigrants (albeit maybe 3rd generation, but still) by chosing to live in France / taking French nationality, anyone effectively choses to live in that society! sorry, but still - live by the rules of the society you chose to live in

I think their point is that it is in the interests of the security of the majority.

In a democracy everyone gets a vote, but it is unrealistic to assume everyone will get what they want; that is lawlessness. Welcome to Haiti, for that example.

The French argument is that the covering stops identification, and threatens security.

Sadly, some extremist MEN will wear the Burqa, to try to evade security and commit terrorist acts, so the French say.

They feel justified by protecting the majority, not the minority.
