Sand in the bottom of my pool

Since the recent sand storm I have a layer of sand in the bottom of my pool and as a novice in looking after pools I am not sure how to deal with it? Can I get a hoover to suck it out? - the water is being filtered but the sand still sits at the bottom of the pool. Any help or advice gratefully received.

Please don't use a hoover or anything else not intended for the job.

I can't recommend a pool cleaning service, but I am sure that someone in QL can.
