Lashed girl's body exhumation

I read about this case in the Gulf Times last week. Then I noticed a thread about it here on QL. I have searched to find the original thread but can't find it.

However I am please that I came across this story today on the BBC, because it looks like something is being done about it at last.

The High Court in Bangladesh has ordered the authorities to exhume the body of a 14-year-old girl who received about 80 lashes in public.

Hena Begum died a week after she received the punishment for allegedly having an affair with a married man.

The court ordered a three-member committee of doctors and forensic experts to conduct another post-mortem to ascertain the reason for her death.

The girl was punished by villagers for her alleged crime last month.

The High Court order comes after the initial post-mortem report said there was "no sign of any external or internal injuries to the body of Hena Begum".

can't agree more with edifis

democracy in ME may be possible when all natural resources O&G vanish.

Exiled I believe Bush doesn't really want democracy in the ME. It's an easier task to dictate one man than to control the will of a parliament!

Bush: 'either you are with us or you are against us'

Indeed most crusades were unsuccessful however bush's vision of bringing democracy to the middle east seems to be coming true......maybe history will see him as a great leader after all.....

sister mona please do not go that route to discuss anything with him or others, they r full of hate they forget things like ethnic cleansing of native indians in north and south america and australia but bash islam and sharia 24/7, they think colombous and his buddies were muslims, apartheid in south africa was done by muslims, belgum n germany involvment in rwanda was becoz of islam they think without religions the world will live in peace n harmony so there is no point discussing things with him or others they hate islam and muslims but they continue to live in a muslim country where they leave their front door open, the keys in car switch safe and free and good salary

You are right. However I believe in Bush's case , the two were interlinked.

"The Crusades were expeditions undertaken, in fulfilment of a solemn vow, to deliver the Holy Places from Mohammedan tyranny." This definition cannot be upheld anymore. We use the word differently nowadays. WK (one of the QL members) is permanently on a crusade to find a girl friend. And Bush is on a crusade, too. But what is his 'vow'? Bringing democracy (another ideology). So, religion is not necessarily connected to 'crusade' anymore. It can be any idea, ideology, or any belief. It can even be a crazy idea (like WK's).

By anonymous• 10 Feb 2011 10:11

They were not crusade wars.... did they replace the religions in Iraq and Afghanistan with Christanity? The crusades were launched in the 12th century to take the 'holy land' from the muslims invaders. However the muslims won and kept them until recently...

Nic can you please tell me what is your religious/cultural background?

I need to know, so that I can understand the way you think better. I never had the opportunity to discuss this issue with a non Muslim in a forum. If it is OK with you I'd like to continue this discussion and see what we can get.

NIC

those who are using Sharia laws for their evil deeds are similar to European witch hunters of 16th century.

The difference b/w the two parties is only religion, one belonged to Christianity, and the other one is to Islam.

FathimaH,

History has shown us that this sad incident is not an exception.

It is clear that what you were told that are divine texts which can never be revised, contains material that can be used by mankind to cause harm and sufferance to others.

If these texts were so divine, wouldn’t they take into account man's imperfections and wouldn’t they be written in a way that they could never be used to other purpose but to spread peace and improve mankind?

No, it didn’t happen that way, who ever wrote them, forgot the human factor and thus we see the violence perpetrated in their name.

I know you cannot touch them or even criticize their contents and that is what this world will suffer on and on in the name of some divine scripts mixed with human ignorance and evil.

It’s a fact that the world must live with, but too bad that those who have nothing to do with such sect must be negatively affected by it...

Someone somewhere forgot that human kind could follow what is written in those subjective scripts to their own interest and cause pain to others... or maybe not, was it all planned? to be misused by mankind to ensure fear lives always among us!?

Can you imagine how we non-followers really think (and mostly don’t dare to say it loudly) about the way your fellow practicionners of your ideology, apply your ideology?!

I can assure you that we generally don’t have this fearful position towards any other religion!

Your ideology applies such pressure on human kind in the modern days that forces the majority to live in a continuous state of hypocrisy!

A very tiny almost invisible minority follow it as you attempt to describe it to me.

Personally, I only know of you and it’s from reading what you write.

Again it goes back to faith...we believe the Quran and the sunnah and all it commands is forever. And we also believe that if practiced the way it should then it will not be barbaric and unjust but only increase good and decrees evils, and that by abiding by it we will only achieve happiness and success not just in this life but eternally. However sadly today thats not the case. Which is why cases like mentioned in the op occur and people assume thats what shariah law is!

FathimaH,

Savage and uncivilized punishment made some sense on the 7th century in a social uncivilized barbaric environment, not TODAY!

The world has progressed since then and man-kind became more civilized in many ways.

The dangerous is to stubbornly insist in considering some texts as timeless. Everything moves on, any forced stagnation will cause pressure and it will end up bursting.

For those 25% who have no choice (as they are imposed not to challenge) wake up and move on! Update yourselves to the XXI century just like the rest of the 75% of the world is doing.

Live here and now your life and please let others live theirs!

Your ideology might me all wrong and if it was, just imagine how disappointed you'll be for restricting yourself so much in this one and only life you have!

Last I checked the eighty lashes are never meant to kill. I know people who have been lashed and have merely been badly bruised for a while. Also a person's age and physical condition are supposed to be considered before such a punishment is handed down. So if its a teenager and/or a person of weaker physical condition then the penalty is either completely wiped off or given in a lighter degree. Its clearly obviously a misuse of the law...yet again, by a group of barbaric fools lacking knowledge. I hope and pray those guilty are prosecuted and put to death themselves..wishful thinking? Raheemullah Hena Begum! =(
