Excess Baggage - Charges at Doha Airport

Hi all, I and my wife are moving to Qatar from Australia for work. We have around 140 kilos of total baggage to move all the way from Australia to Doha, Qatar. We'll be allowed 60 kilos on 2 tickets to fly with us. The rest of 80 kilos I am thinking of sending by excess baggage services.

There are quite a few companies here in Australia that offer services to fly your excess baggage from airport-to-airport.

Does anyone knows how much charges I need to pay at Doha Airport (for e.g., clearance charges, storage fees, airport terminal fees, etc)?. I am asking this because the companies here do not include destination airport charges (if any).

Also does anyone have good or bad experiences with moving excess baggage from airport-to-airport? I wanted to do door-to-door delivery but it costs a lot more (almost double of airport-to-airport cost), so trying to avoid that. Can someone please help? Thanks in anticipation.

Yes, I agree with marycatherine. Thats what I did too, just hire a taxi.

The people at Cargo terminal are generally quite friendly, but have big problems speaking in English. Best of Luck

I would suggest you hire a driver to take you there, wait, and take you home - parking is bad and getting a taxi (especially on a hot day) can seem like it takes forever.

If I send unaccompanied baggage ghrough an agent in the UK, it wil get to doha airport cargo terminal I presume. Is this easy to get to by taxi. And at the terminal, will I be able to get a vehicle and driver (taxi) to take me back with luggage.I'm not sure I can fit all my things in to the regular karwa taxi, are there other options? many thanks

Excess baggage (or unaccompanied baggage is definitely the best option). i moved a similar amount (about 100kgs) out of australia to the Middle east a couple of years ago and looked into the various options and it was by far the best. Then last year I moved the same stuff from Jordan to Doha. I did door to airport which meant that I picked the stuff up myself here in doha. It took a couple of hours but was quite painless - just involved paying very small fees (I remember I had to use a credit card as cash wasn't accepted). It all worked out well and although i can't remember the exact amount I paid it wasn't much at all (less than a 100$ total). Just send the stuff from Australia a couple of days before you leave and it should arrive here a few days after you arrive, then you won't have to pay storage. I definitely recommend picking it up from the airport yourself. Just make sure you do a thorough check on the freight company. i used a company based in sydney and they liquidated the week after i paid them and dropped my stuff. It was a bit tricky as my stuff was then ceased (still in the warehouse) and I lost my 1000 dollars which i never got back. I'm sure this is just an instance of bad luak though, but just check out your company thoroughly first. Good luck.

When i came i sent from a cargo place.... what area in Australia are you coming from??

Umm... If theres 140kgs and you are allowed 60kg each how is that 80kgs left over??

When i arrived i didnt pay much at all for delivery fees... but then again that was a few years ago!

As mentioned above is it all really needed??

They do have things here... so you dont have to bring absolutely EVERYTHING with ya ;)

Usually you're given a few days grace before they start charging any storage fees - like shotmaker says, there will be some clearance and delivery fees but probably not too painful (it's been a few years since I've done it so I won't quote any prices)

I would say that you get your local cargo agent services to send your extra baggage. I did the same last July coming from KSA to Doha. I paid around 210 QAR at Qatar aviation (100 for deliver order charges,110 for local agent customs clearance fee) There should be no hassle as it was in my case..Just keep the AWB with you and get in touch with Qatar Aviation by the time you are here in Qatar, usually as far as I know, you are the one responsible to take in your cargo with the assistance of clearing agents available at the Qatar Aviation..I suppose this could give you an idea..welcome to Qatar!!

Skeeter, turn off your CAP LOCK!

AP, ask about unaccompanied baggage. I think that is a cheaper option.

AS FAR AS I KNOW, THERE IS VERY LITTLE CHARGES AT DOHA AIRPORT FOR STORING STUFF FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS. LIKE NO MORE THAN 20USD PER DAY. AND THERE ARE NO CLEARANCE TAXES WHATSOEVER . YOU JUST HAVE TO COMPLY WITH THE ISLAMIC RULES, MEANING NO SEX, ALCOHOL, OR PORK ITEMS STORED WITHIN YOUR LUGGAGE. AS FOR TRANSPORTING THE ITEMS FROM AIRPORT TO YOUR DOOR STEP, YOU CAN EASLY RENT A MEDIUM SIZE TRUCK FOR AS LITTLE AS 30USD, LABOUR INCLUDED. HOPE IT HELPS!
