But why does the Queen keep on calling it Gatar. Can't Brits say Q or what? I know some British people who can pronounce Qatar properly, or is she too old to say it. just wondering I mean when you have the head of a state visit your country your staff should tell you how to pronounce the name of the country or what do you think?

most British Civil Servants and Politicians think they are above being told anything and will pronounce it how they like even as Quatar bansed on Qantas being pronounced Quantos.

The queens advisors on the other hand would ensure that the Queen is not embarrassed and very it both with the Qatar Embassy in London as well as with the entourage of the Emir before she does anything to embarrass herself or be rude to her guest by pronouncing it incorrectly.

As she is not a native Arabic Speaker nor has a native Qatari dialect, then even with all these efforts her Gatar, or Giahtar would be a dam site closer (90%) than the Catar or Katar (30%), used by most including myself as I am unable to even get close to the correct Giah-tar sound required.

See you have removed the "I am not a Qatari" comment and left your nationality as Qatar, I assume therefore you are a Qatari, so you should know how your own country is pronounced. If you are not a Qatari, then change your Nationality as that just shows what a fool you are to ask these questions.

It is not what you think..... :O)

It is a traditional method of using small cups to cause suction on areas of the body. The suction, pulls up the skin into the cup and brings fresh blood to improve circulation.

That sounds rather complicated...

Cupping Women; to pour a beverage into a womans mouth and make that women place her hand on her hip, and elbow bent (like a handle).

Lift the woman by the arm and proceed to drink from the womans mouth; e.g like drinking from a cup.

way back in 1825 the great Sheikh might have outsourced the naming process to a SE Asian Pearl-Diver-turned-contractor-overnight... and like the messed up road signs they paint, they messed up big time and no one noticed till the Queen tippy toed in on a bright sunny day and brought the rain down on this realization!

I have to say before I came to Qatar I did a little research and was told it was pronounced Gatar, so I was a little perplexed when I got here to find people pronouncing it Katar -the Queen's advisors always do prelim protocol stuff before any state events etc and I suppose this is what she would have been told

@medohaqatar, how do you know its a verified pronunciation when your ambassador pronounces it as Qatar or do they have double standards.

The Queen's advisers work out everything in advance - so I don't think it was wrong..

Anyway, great speeches .. Even Camila !Her Horseness" seemd to be enjoying herself..

Is correct.

'Qatar' has been exported to be pronounced as closer to 'Git-ar', it is only since I arrived here that I ever heard it called 'Cat-are'

my understanding is that Qatar is not the correct pronunciation and Gatar is closer (though not perfect about 90%) and as for the Queen being a Gueen, it won't work. The U is what makes Queen sound like kween, as Qatar has no U it sounds more like Katar than Kwatar.

The Queen's advisors would have checked with the Qatari Embassy to make sure it was as correct as possible for a non Arabic speaker.

before you argue your profile says "I am not a Qatari" yet your Nationality says "Qatar" So you need to sort out which you are before criticising the Queen for her verified pronunciation.

Exactly imagine calling her Gueen of England. I Think the staff should have done a better job of telling her how to pronounce it properly.
