A Real Doha Mystery - I'm Intrigued!
Arrests for ‘offensive’ cakes sale
The Preventive Security Department at the Ministry of Interior has arrested a number of persons of different nationalities for making cakes of “offensive and abrasive models” and selling them in one of the restaurants in Doha.
A spokesman for the ministry said the culprits were arrested on a tip-off. “The information from a source was passed on to the Preventive Security Department. Search and surveillance proved the information to be correct and the permission of the Public Prosecution was sought to conduct a raid at the site.
“A sting operation was carried out to trap the suspects,” the official said. “The Public Prosecution has ordered to detain them and to file a case and to refer them to the concerned court.”
The official said the operation was held as part of the efforts of the security agencies under the Ministry of Interior to maintain the safety and security of the community and to respect its values, characters and public norms.

What can the 'offensive' cakes depict?
Cakes celebrating some gal's new breast implants?
Unveiled face cakes?
Karma Sutra instructional cakes?
What do you think?
Next headline may read:
'Cakes imprisoned for a year then deported for maintaining illicit relations'
A year! No!!!! They'll be stale by then!
I actually have seen said "offensive cakes" and I linked pics. They are for celebrations like bachelors parties!

apparently QL Mod's are too active to Ban the poster itself, if s/he open a thread for 9/11 in humorous way.
may be in bad taste but no one is going to be arrested for it.
how people would react to a twin tower cake every 9/11
Back home, we could order these (offensive) cakes for all types of occassion...but not in Qatar.
Imagine I was thinking of ordering an obscene cake for a girlfriend of mine on her bachelorette bash but couldn't find one...
IMO, these little things shouldn't bother the authorities coz the ones who orders these goodies are obviously not the locals but expats and/or guests of this country.
the cake must be fake adultrated with those ubiquitous silicones...to make it look big but you cannot bite.
Hi!
I love the Gulf Times! Do you know it won an award last month for the 6th - YES! 6th!!! - best English newspaper in the ME.
Last week it reported a couple sentenced to a year imprisonment and deportation for........ wait for it...........NOT illict relations....... but..........'hugging'.
LOL-LLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!

hello Adey ! thank you for posting this. I LOL-ing alot after reading the thread. Especially after been in Durham for a year now ...I must admit I miss Qatar journalism lol.
Brit...you promised you wouldn't tell anyone about my choice of undies :-(
One could say the same about strawberry flavoured edible underwear.... But that's another story..
Good idea Brit, I might ask the "toy" shop to use a similar non descript brown box too ;-)
Why are so called "haram" things so much fun?
Well cakes should be haram (BIG LOOOL). They're sweet and delicious :-). I'm not saying they should sell them here it's just people need to get a sense of humor.
I'm waiting for KFC and the other f.food (also "juice stalls") joints to come up with they're own special way to disgust us. Ohh wait I forgot they already do with their smelly, tumor infested, rotten beaks and claws approach to food :-).
I'd rather see a weird cake than be struck by the smell of some of Doha's inhabitants. Now that's really sick. Have they banned water and soap :-)?
They should deport the fish also they too have a scent that might seem offensive (if you like dirty jokes u know what i mean :-)
Scratching ones cojones in the middle of the street while wearing a robe is another common occurrence here that's always overlooked.
2 guys holding hands is a sign of friendship... NO IT'S NOT. IT'S INCREDIBLY OFFENSIVE.
Shouting on the phone in the cinema during a movie it's also offensive and calls for a beating. :-)
Hitting cats and dogs and not taking care of them should be haram and punishable by death through castration.
I'm not saying other people are perfect (everyone's f... up to a certain extent) but at least we're not proud of our retarded actions and list them in the newspaper as good things.
When everyone will be able to laugh and make fun of themselves the world will be a better place (especially if my castrating people idea catches on)
Check out the website, then order..
They will be delivered in a non descript brown box..
I always want what I can't have...how do I get these cakes??
"there are lot of ways to express but pls dont do it here and never do it on the cakes"
This has made me chuckle........this has made my day.....I shall sleep tonight with a broad grin on my face.
Thanks
Xena all such buildings are supposed to be... Phallic symbols ... being inside such structures supposedly give "energy rush"...lol
Being on top/tip of a huge mountain gives such a energy rush. If one mediates on top of a mountain the effect is supposed to increases manifold.... also depends upon the structure of the mountain... (thats why the Indian Rishis used to go to the Himalaya to meditate....)
Domes are supposed to be the female counterpart.... receptive symbolism....
TailChopper, I agree with you brother ... not only that selling human flesh is rampant this days.
so afraid of the private parts. Don't muslims have them?
I would like to bite off the boob implants and perky cherry nipples. Where is the cake?
doha the sin city
ummmm..... tasty Brit.... have no idea which to choose;-P
Sshhhhhhhh....
Did you manage to order your cake ? :O)
that Qtel hasn't banned that site yet;-P
Lol Xena, that should certainly be labelled an offensive structure on display.
shortage of men parts ;)

doesn't look like a dildo?
Oh, this is funny, not just for the obvious reason but also for the Gulf Times not including any information such as who, what and where.
Mandi
i've seen cakes depicting human private parts at some gatherings... so may be such cakes are offensive.
Well, there you have a niche market..."cake abayas".
if veils can be banned, rude cakes can be too
What???Private parts???who would lick and chew those shapes....YUCKs
hahaha what was the shape of the cake???Cutting up and eating chocolate figures is an offence???
they should have covered it up, maybe that would've made it legit ;)
this was published two days ago in the local newspapers(http://www.al-sharq.com/articles/more.php?id=211481&date=2010-10-02), but why would a bakery sale cakes that takes shape of human private parts unless being requested by customers! Maybe they should track down the buyers ;)
it will be a 'cake walk'
“A sting operation was carried out to trap the suspects,” the official said.
I wonder if there is a cake patrol..
I thought the only crimes a cake committed was causing obesity, diabetes, and other health hazards to those who consumed em!
Yes, but this is not the magic kingdom.
Plus it's an amusing thread - don't kill it with sensible answers. :P
Lol...may be cakes were showing too much skin or hurting religious sentiments in some way. They should have published the pics to get the point across :-)
You miss the point - It's all about someone's perception.
I worked on a base in Saudi. At new years's time , we were sitting in the mess hall and there was a large cake at the frint table decorated with the words "Happy New Year". Suddenly four or five locals accompanied by two MPs walked in. Took a large knife. Scrubbed away the iced lettering and walked out. No words exchanged...
I think you miss the point...........It's cake!!!
:)
May I suggest that you look at the following link ...
Perhaps this is the answer :

on facebook.
Amazing the responses I get from all around the world.
They can usually be characterized as generally being of this reaction:
WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WK - What a cake indeed! I hear on the grapevine that such cakes can still be purchased 'under the counter', for the right money, somewhere in the Pearl.
lol I just clarified what all the cake did or supposedly did :P
think before you post. DON'T EDIT :P
"The official said the operation was held as part of the efforts of the security agencies under the Ministry of Interior to maintain the safety and security of the community and to respect its values, characters and public norms."
Wow a cake threatened safety, security, values, characters and public norms.", what a cake!!!!
all will be speculations!
this is sick journalism...
Don't report an incomplete story.....I really wanna know how a cake can be offensive..??
Soaked in Alcohol? Drugged??? Nude pics??? Ugly looking??? Tasteless???
